Northwest Division Defensive Coordinator of The Year: Nordhoff DC Cliff Farrar

Nordhoff DC Cliff Farrar

Farrar had been to the CIF finals four previous times as a head coach and each time came away on the short end. Following a very short retirement, weeks in length, he returned to the Rangers program as the defensive coordinator and oversaw a unit that would lead the way to the first title in school history.

In 12 games played in 2011 Nordhoff surrendered 296 points, in 14 games this fall the Rangers allowed only 162.

By the numbers the offense turned the ball over 22 times, but Farrar’s defense had 33 take-aways: 17 interceptions and 16 fumbles. Nordhoff’s defense recorded 31 hurries, 18 sacks, defended 46 passes, blocked a punt, a kick, and pitched two shutouts. Seven times the Rangers held opponents to less than ten points.

In the Northwest Final against North Torrance, Nordhoff’s defense held the Saxons to just 14 points. The Pioneer League champs were averaging 40 points per game coming into the contest.

Farrar served as the Rangers head coach from 1987 to 2007. From 2008 through 2011 he led the Buena High School program. In 25 years as a head coach his career record was 171-119-2. He retired at the conclusion of last season, but was lured back by Rangers HC Tony Henney.
