Damien Spartans: 2012 Covina Tournament Champs

(Covina) – Damien took a seven point lead into the fourth quarter and then had to hold on to beat Rowland 59-57 Saturday night to win the 59th Annual Covina Christmas Tournament. It was the second straight Covina Tournament title for the Spartans.

Rowland had a shot to tie it with 14 seconds left but Joseph Dionisio missed a driving layup at the buzzer and the Raiders fell short.

Jeremy Hemsley scored 19 points to lead the Spartans. Hemsley, who scored 23 points in the semi final game against California Friday night picked up Tournament MVP for his efforts. Hemsley scored seven points in the fourth quarter including three big free throws. Ayo Adeji finished with 11 points, Isaiah McCullough had nine and Jared Dizon added eight.

For Rowland, Dionisio 19, Chris Arzadon 18 and Saeed Montoya 14, combined for 53 of the team’s 57 points. Dionisio and Arzadon combined for 19 of Rowland’s 21 points in the fourth quarter. Both players earned all tournament honors.

Damien led 30-25 at the half and extended it to seven at the end of three before holding on at the end.
