When the switch was flipped and the Montview and Olympic League’s were rolled into the Northwest Division the top quarterback was going to Maranatha’s Andrew Elffers. If not Elffers it was going to be Jacob Kalama of Torrance. Perhaps Ivan Vasquez at La Puente or Ryan Esslinger out of Whittier Christian.
Nobody had in mind the Saxon’s Jorge Hernandez. North Torrance hadn’t won a playoff game in years and in 2011 they were only 2-8. Why would anyone suspect this guy would be the division’s player of the year…but he is.
When you throw 57 touchdown passes and 4,000 yards it has a tendency to vault you to elite status. Hernandez not only executed but led his team the CIF Finals. With his rocket arm and excellent touch he made receivers Mikey Jurado and Devante Jenkins contenders for this same award. He also rushed for close to 500 yards.
Highlights can be found of him all over the web, but he’s probably best described as being El Monte’s Brandon Martinez with a stronger arm. The EM quarterback has faster feet. Congrats to him
