(Montebello) The Schurr Spartans got a three touchdown performance from Chris Chairmonte and thoroughly dominated the visiting Wilson Wildcats Friday night 42-0 at Ken Davis Field.

After struggling to put the ball in the end zone last week against Downey, Schurr (2-1) turned things around and scored touchdowns on all four offensive drives of the first half.

“Last week we played like a young team and got ahead of ourselves.  This week we went back and got a little more basic and the team responded well” commented Spartan Head Coach Ben Negrete.

The Spartans wasted no time getting points on the board.  After a punt put Schurr deep in their own territory, the Spartans went on a 10-play 93-yard drive for a score.  The drive relied heavily on the legs of Nick Castillo who capped the drive with a two yard run.

Wilson (2-1) was unable to move the ball on their next possession and Schurr went on the march again this time getting a score from Nathan Ayon on a three yard run.

With the score 14-0 with 8:15 left in the second quarter, Wilson’s Moses Vega led the Wildcats on a drive into Spartan territory.  The drive ended at the Schurr 25 when Vega coughed the ball up and the Spartans recovered the loose ball.

The Spartans wasted no time in converting the turnover.  On the second play from scrimmage, Aaron Cantu hooked up with Chairmonte on a 72-yards strike that put Schurr up 21-0 midway through the second frame.

Perhaps feeling the pressure of being down three scores, Vega tried to force a pass out in the flat that Chairmonte stepped in front of for an interception.  Chairmonte returned the ball to the Spartan 31 but a flag pushed the ball back to the 16.

The Spartan offense went back to work and scored on a 10 play drive when Cantu found Carlos Arredondo from seven

yards away.  Cantu finished the night in perfect fashion hitting 11 of 11 for 247-yards and three scores.

Schurr continued the score fest on their first drive of the second half.  The Cantu to Chairmonte connection was back in effect for a touchdown from 30-yards away.

Chairmonte capped the scoring for the evening scooping up a Vega fumble and racing to a 51-yard run to paydirt.

“We’re a young team and that’s the way a football season goes you have peaks and valleys.  We got a couple of wins the last two weeks and that was huge for our program.  Then you play a team like this who smacks you in the mouth and it’s a reality check” Head Coach Brian Zavala said after the game.
