Mid-Valley Division MVP: El Monte Quarterback Brandon Martinez

A quarterback for the ages; El Monte’s Brandon Martinez

Everything was contentious for the Mid Valley Sports staff when it came to post-honors and who should get them. We fought over everything and nearly everyone. And every complaint we’ve heard up to this point has some merit (except the “political” argument)…

However when it came to Brandon Martinez. We put his name on the big board and it was done. No debate, no discussion, no consideration, no dissension. It was almost like ten years ago when we could have made Temple City’s Desmond Reed anything and nobody would have complained. That’s how good Martinez was in 2012.

The Lions Show began with him, hinged on him, depended on him. This is why he is the MVP. With all of that attention, pressure, he showed tremendous leadership and poise, especially in the moments when games were on the line.

By the Numbers: 266 completions, 4,286 yards passing, 44 touchdown passes, 723 yards rushing, 8 rushing touchdowns, 52 touchdowns total. Greatest passing season in El Monte school history. Share of first league title since 1979. First playoff win since 1979. First on campus playoff victory since 1937. First victory over Arroyo since 1990

Just by looking at the numbers posted on MaxPreps you can get a concept of how big Martinez’s career was. Between 2004 and 2010 Lions quarterbacks threw 67 touchdown passes. In 2011 and 2012 Martinez threw for 71.

Note* Considering what Martinez accomplished and what Steven Rivera did at Arroyo, we would prefer not be involved when the quarterback debate for the all-decade team comes up in 2019.
