(Monrovia) – The Wildcats avenged last season close loss with a 21-13 victory over Ayala. The defense led the way in the second half allowing just two Bulldog field goals en route to beginning the season 1-0.

Monrovia was virtually in “cruise” control midway through the first half as the offense led by Kurt Scoby and Deshawn Potts. Scoby ran for 139 yards and scored one touchdown, while Potts went 11 of 19 for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

Jordan Nathan’s 16-yard touchdown reception gave the Wildcats a lead they wouldn’t relinquish and Scoby’s one-yard run midway through the second quarter all but sealed it as the Wildcat defense displayed a “bend, don’t break” attitude throughout the game.

  • Scoby was all everything for Monrovia, in the first half he sacked Bulldogs quarterback Brian Meyette as they were driving for a score inside the 20-yard line late in the second quarter. Scoby also managed to electrify the crowd with an explosive punt return midway through the second quarter. He also made a great open field block to spring Crayvon Gillespie.
  • Ayala will look to its lack of execution inside the “red zone” as they only managed two field goals from five visits. Two times they managed to shoot themselves in the foot with delay of game penalties. On two occasions they missed field goals that could have either cut the score or taken the lead.
  • Potts found seven different Wildcat receivers in the game. None had more than two receptions.
  • Monrovia missed a golden opportunity to close the door on any Bulldog comeback late in the first half as they drove all the way to the Ayala 1-yard line. Potts appeared to be stepped on during a second and goal. While trying to stay on his feet he lost the football and was recovered by Ayala’s Sammy Salcido.
  • Monrovia’s Darione Jones left the game in the first quarter with an undisclosed injury.
