San Dimas' Gabe Jimenez and the Saints will have to avoid a let down against Ganesha this week.

Good Afternoon!

I don’t think this “Wildcat” fad, as Villathedevil likes to call it, is going away.

Watching Miami last night brought to mind Paul Westhead’s Loyola Marymount teams back in the day when they broke all the rules. Chad Henne was terrific and I don’t know how he keeps his rhythm coming on and off the field all the time.

Some local coaches had this to say;

“I was amazed at Miami ’s personnel. It seems like they have collected the greatest spread college athletes of the past five years, the Miami offense will start the new trend of offense much like Bill Walsh did with the West Coast offense.  It also buys time if you want to bring a young quarterback up slowly,” said San Dimas HC Bill Zernickow.

“The Miami Dolphins lead the NFL in rushing yards per game from the Wildcat formation, the Flordia Gators lead the Nation in rushing yards per game from the Spread formation. It doesn’t matter what you look like or how you line up, as long as blockers block, runners run and coaches coach,” said Temple City HC Anthony White.

“I was totally impressed with the “Wildcat” offense and can see it spreading like the flu throughout football. I think it would work best with a guy who can really run and throw from that position. We used (Jose) Garay a lot in that way the last couple of years when he ran for over 700 yards in each year. It is a good “twist” to your offense, but in the end execution is the key, no matter what offense you run, you gotta execute,” said former South El Monte HC Erick Escamilla.

“The main defensive problem is that the “Wildcat” sort of has the effect of a 12 man offense. It makes defenses account for the quarterback in ways the NFL isn’t use to,” said South Hills HC Steve Bogan.

“They do a great job of playing to their strengths.  Obviously they are getting really solid line play.  It all starts with their ability to block and move bodies.  (Ronnie) Brown and (Ricky) Williams run very hard.  It takes the pressure off Henne to have to make all the plays. Brown makes it really hard on defenses from the wildcat (I was ahead of the times when I used Desmond (Reed) in that regard!!). Great players make any style of offense look really good!” Said current San Marino OC Mike Mooney.

“It must be great to have those types of tools to work with. Teams on the defensive side have to account and practice for different types of packages. This makes a defensive coordinator’s job that much harder. You also have to spend more of your practice time scheming them up,” said Wilson HC Brian Zavala.

Oh, I have always been a Braylon Edwards fan! That’s my boy!

Did you know that Rosemead is 30-10 in the Mission Valley League under Matt Koffler? A closer look shows they are 29-6 if you toss out a 1-4 record in his first season in 1999.

Four of those losses have come to Arroyo, while he is 3-2 head to head against Jim Singiser.

Since 1995 San Marino has only beaten Monrovia once, that came with a 12-0 win at home in 2003 (the last time Monrovia failed to qualify for the playoffs).

M-Town leads the series all-time 20-12.

On this date in 1989 Arroyo’s Robert Kwan ran for 161-yards (4 Tds), Darren MaClellan ran for 127-yards (Td), as the Knights hammered Rosemead 35-6 at what is now Marinelli Stadium.

A few miles north on the same night at San Marino the Titans Kevin Sheehan scored on a 22-yard run, Alphonso Montoya scored on a 32-yard run in a 21-0 victory over Monrovia. The game had been scoreless through the first half.

A few miles north on the same night in La Canada, Temple City quarterback Terry Fesler  kept the ball on an option from the 10 and scored tailback Chris Antonio’s block. It was the game’s only touchdown, Antonio caught the two-pointer, and the Rams won 8-0.

Antonio, who rushed 20 times for 144-yards, was Fesler’s option on the play and when he saw he wasn’t going to get the ball sprinted ahead of his teammate and cleared the path.

Note to San Dimas: Nice win, beautiful, now don’t suffer a let down against Ganesha.

After losing its first four meetings with the Giants, the Saints have rolled off 12 consecutive victories.

Mt. View, going to “The Swamp” this Friday night to play South El Monte, is 0-15 all-time against the Eagles.

Stay thirsty my friends…
