Diamond Ranch gets the victory

(Pico Rivera)- In an evening dominated by penalties and turnovers, the Diamond Ranch Panthers held on to beat the host El Rancho Dons, 24-19, Friday evening at Ernie Johnson Field.

After a scoreless first quarter, Diamond Ranch got on the board with a 38-yard field goal by senior kicker Diego Barbosa. Later in the third, the Panthers added another score when Senior QB Kalean Williams connected with junior receiver Davion Gaisie. The remainder of the Panther scoring was provided by defense and special teams, as senior John Perkins returned an El Rancho kickoff 96-yards for a touchdown . Senior Daniel Garcia returned a recovered fumble 98-yards for the Panther’s final score of the evening.

El Rancho found its offensive groove in the second and third quarters. Senior quarterback Andrew Perea threw for a pair of touchdowns, finding Junior wide receiver Adrian Pop for a 30-yard score, and connecting with senior wide out Richard Cuellar for a 10-yard strike. The Dons final score came on a 3-yard touchdown run by senior running back Issiah Copado.

***The game included 25 accepted penalties: 11 for El Rancho and 14 for Diamond Ranch
***Penalty Yardage: Diamond Ranch-102 yards, El Rancho- 100 yards.
***The game also featured five turnovers…Three for Diamond Ranch and two for El Rancho

***The score at halftime: Diamond Ranch-10, El Rancho 6
***DR Defensive Standout- Mateo Rodarte- Fumble recovery, Interception, and two sacks.
***ER Defensive Standout- Eric Rodarte- Two sacks on successive plays from scrimmage.
***Note: The two previous items are not typos. Each team had a Defensive standout…with the same last name.
***El Rancho’s next game is against the host Katella Knights on 10/3/14 at 7:00PM.
***Diamond Ranch’s next opponent is the Charter Oak Chargers, on 10/9/14. Game time is TBD.
