(St. George, UT) – Azusa Pacific scored 21 consecutive points, including 14 in the fourth quarter to beat Dixie State Saturday 42-23 night at Hansen Stadium in St. George, Utah. Terrell Watson scored three touchdowns and Chad Jeffries scored twice on the ground to lead the way.

APU led 21-20 at halftime but a 42-yard field goal by Alex Giordani put Dixie up 23-21 early in the third quarter. Watson scored on an 11-yard run to give the Cougs the lead with 7:23 left in the third. In the fourth APU broke it open in the fourth.

Ryan Adams’ 26-yard run in the fourth quarter gave the Cougars a 35-23 advantage. After another defensive stop Watson picked up his third of the night on a 17-yard romp with 3:43 left.

Watson was the bell cow as usual for the Cougars with 187 yards on 30 carries. He averaged over six yards per haul. Jeffries ground out 80 yards on 13 carries including a long of 13 yards. Watson scored on a two-yard run to open the contest in the first quarter.

Ben Longshore fired a pair of TD passes for the Red Storm- both in the first half. The second one was a 21-yard strike to Dalton Groskreutz that tied the game at 14 with 11:28 left in the second quarter. Longshore put the ball up 42 times for Dixie State completing 23 of them for 180 yards and no interceptions.

The Red Storm had 158 yards on the ground compared to 308 for Azusa Pacific. APU totaled 444 yards to 338 for the Red Storm. There was only one turnover in the contest- a Jeffries interception by Dixie State.

Jeffries’ seven-yard run gave APU a 21-14 lead midway through the second but Hayden Gavett crossed the goal line on  six-yard blast with just 32 seconds left in the half. The extra point was blocked. That was the last time Dixie scored a touchdown with APU getting the last three after the third quarter Dixie St. field goal.

Defensively linebacker Steven Fanua had 13 total tackles for the Cougars.

Azusa Pacific improved 3-1 overall while Dixie State dropped to 0-4. The Cougars are at Central Washington next week.
