(Covina) – Charter Oak held off a last minute rally by Muir in a 20-19 victory Friday night in the first round of the CIF Southeast Division Playoffs.
Mustang quarterback Jarron Williams (12 of 25 192-yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception) connected with receiver Ormoni Duncan (4 catches 89-yds 2 scores) on a 30-yard touchdown pass with four seconds left in the game to bring Muir within one point of sending the game into overtime. Coach Ken Howard sent out his offense to attempt a game winning two-point conversion.
“We were going to spy the quarterback and look for the quarterback draw up the middle because he’s such a great athlete,” revealed C.O. head coach Lou Farrar of their last play strategy.
Kevon Seymour came in motion for the Mustangs as the ball was snapped. Williams faked the hand off to Seymour and called his own number only to be stopped by a stifling Charger defense.
The Charter Oak offense scored the first 20 points of the game starting with a 16-yard touchdown by Brandon Golden mid-way through the second quarter.
C.O. found itself on the Muir 34 yard line with two minutes left in the first half when Travis Santiago hung up a pass that was intercepted by Williams killing the Charter Oak drive.
The Chargers led 7-0 at the half.
C.O. added to their lead in the second half with two Adam Muema (29 carries 188-yds) touchdowns, one from 18-yards out and the other from 2-yards out.
Down 20 in the fourth quarter, Williams led his offense down to the Charger 32-yardline and found Duncan down the sideline for the ‘Stangs first score of the game.
Charter Oak, now up 20-6, helped the Mustang cause with a Donald Martin fumble recovered by the Mustangs Williams.
Williams then hit Trayveion Yates on a 31-yard tail back screen for a touchdown that cut the lead to seven after Howard Vaughn made the PAT.
The Chargers ensuing possession started on their own 24-yard line with 2:45 left in the game. They kept the ball on ground looking to run out the clock when on a third and 6 Santiago ran a play-action boot and was met in the backfield by Vaughn who jarred loose the ball and gave Muir their last shot to win the game.
