(Boyle Heights) – Momentum killing penalties, missed opportunities, and turnovers proved costly for Roosevelt as Fairfax raced to a 17-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 24-7 win Wednesday night at Roosevelt High. With the victory Fairfax advanced to the LA City Section Division II Playoff Semi Finals.
Fairfax got a third quarter back breaking touchdown through the air by Ronnell Pompey from Clyde Paschal Jr. before grinding out 10 of 12 fourth quarter minutes to put it away.
Pompey was the favorite target of Paschal, (9-14, 64 yards, 1 touchdown), all night, as he caught 8 of his 9 passes for a touchdown and 54 yards overall. The Lions’ offense established itself on a consistent mixture of quarterback draws and left-right sweeps to pile up 247 rushing yards.
The Lions were led by Matt Bowen Jr. who rushed for 106 yards on 13 carries. Bowen made it 14-0 Fairfax with 7:46 in the second quarter with a 51 yard sweep down the sideline to the house.
Paschal got the Fax rolling with a 7 yard sneak five minutes into the game and overall had 78 on 12 run attempts.
Roosevelt started its first drive with good field position on their own 36 and marched down to the Fairfax 6, but an incomplete pass and wide field goal stalled the drive.
Fairfax fumbled the first play off of that possession, only to gain it the ball right back on the next as Rider quarterback Manny Ayon threw an interception to Dejon Mitchell.
Roosevelt had a third and final chance in Lion territory before halftime but fell inches short on fourth down at the Fairfax 23. Victor Rios chipped in a 30 yard field goal for a 17-0 Fairfax lead at the break.
Ayon ran for 92 on 13 touches for Roosevelt and completed 8 of 17 passes for 60 yards.
