In terms of location, Sierra Canyon is right out there on the fringe of the Mid-Valley Division universe along with Paraclete. Because few get to see them in the San Gabriel Valley they fail to recognize how good this program is and how great this defense was in 2014.

Michael Gonzaga’s unit was fifth in points allowed over 13 games, third overall in sacks, and second overall in interceptions. In the season opener the Trailblazers knocked off back to back city champion San Fernando on the road, snapping SF’s 18 game winning streak in the process. In the second week of October they defeated back to back Northwest champion Nordhoff.

As the playoffs approached Sierra Canyon took on the appearance of the Arizona Cardinals as injuries reduced the offense to its third string quarterback and amped up the pressure on Gonzaga’s defense. Standing out for Gonzaga all year long was trenchman Hunter Mattox, who turned in a 16 tackle/4 sack performance in the Trailblazers 13-7 loss to Paraclete.

Simply put this was a defense that got the job done in 2014, congrats to Coach Gonzaga for putting it together.
