(Pasadena) – Maranatha sprinted out of the gate with a 25 point first quarter and coasted to a 101-54 rout of Pacific Ridge Wednesday night in the opening round of the state playoffs. It looked like the Minutemen would fall short of the century mark but Tevin Khudatyan stole the ball and tossed in a basket as the clock ran out.

Tyler Dorsey played again like…well like Tyler Dorsey as he scored 37 points, 26 in the first half. Dorsey hit four three pointers and threw down several rim rattling jams on breakaways. Sean Romero was deadly from beyond the arc knocking down seven of 11 from  the land of plenty and finished with 21 points. Tey Williams was efficient as usual scoring 10 points and running the show to near perfection.

Sean Romero hit seven back breaking three pointers.

Usually the saying is it was over by halftime. Well this was over in the first quarter. Maranatha opened the game with an 11-3 run highlighted by slam dunks by Dorsey and 6-10 junior Trevor Stanback. Dorsey had 13 in the first quarter and Romero had six as the Minutemen led 25-14 after one.

An 11-2 run to open the second increased the lead to 20 and before you could say Jesse Elrod Maranatha was up 20. Dorsey and Romero splashed five more threes between them and by the time the first half came to an end it was 55-26.

Speaking of Elrod he threw down a huge jam to cap a 27 point third quarter third quarter bringing the raucous home crowd to its feet. It was the usual suspects for Maranatha – Mr. Dorsey and Mr. Romero- who did the damage. Especially Romero who buried three consecutive threes.

The only thing that kept Dorsey from getting 50 and Romero from 30 was head coach Tim Tucker who emptied his bench early in the fourth quarter. But at that point it was an easy decision as Maranatha had opened up a 40 point bulge.

Elrod and Stanback both finished with eight.

Scott Nalbandian put up a murmur of protest for Pacific Ridge with 32 of the 54 points including 15 in the fourth quarter. No other Firebird was in double figures.

Maranatha hit 13 threes overall with Dorsey and Romero combining for 11.

Next up for the Minutemen is Chaminade at home Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
