All games at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated

Friday August 28

Bell Gardens (0-0) at Arcadia (0-0)

How much improved are the Apaches? We’ll find out right away with a good test against Bell Gardens. BG is always physical but will the Lancers be able to match the speed of the Arcadia? Bell Gardens would be wise not to fall behind early. Arcadia pulls away in the fourth.

Arcadia 28 Bell Gardens 17

Burbank (0-0) at Monrovia (0-0)

Maybe the best game of the weekend. Guy Gibbs brings experience back to the quarterback position for Burbank. Monrovia, as usual, looks loaded. The Bulldogs might hang for awhile but in the end The Cats have too much.

Monrovia 31 Burbank 21

Salesian (0-0) at Muir (0-0)

Is Muir is down as much as we’ve heard? No. But will the Stangs beat Salesian? No. Salesian is too talented and is coming off a big playoff run last year. Muir competes but the Mustangs of Salesian wear down the Mustangs of Muir in the end.

Salesian 28 Muir 14

South El Monte (0-0) at Pasadena (0-0)

A win would mean a ton for either team. Both are coming off forgettable years and would like nothing better than to kick off the season with a victory. Could be a struggle to score points as the offenses try to find a groove. Pasadena wins a close one.

Pasadena 17 South El Monte 14

El Rancho (0-0) at Claremont (0-0)

The Roddy Hiatt era begins at El Rancho. The Dons lost a ton of talent but do return enough to rumble. Claremont returns Duy Tran-Sampson. It will be tall task to stop Tran-Sampson and win on the road. Claremont gets it done.

Claremont 24 El Rancho 17

St. John Bosco (0-0) at La Mirada (0-0)

La Mirada HC Mike Moschetti likes to schedule up. This is more than scheduling up. St. John Bosco is just this side of the Green Bay Packers. The Matadores surprised last year with a couple of big wins over top tier teams but they won’t get a W this time. Bosco is just too much.

St. John Bosco 35 La Mirada 14

San Pedro (0-0) at Downey (0-0)

The Vikings couldn’t find anybody local? Tough opener for Jack Williams’ squad. The Pirates went 11-2 last year and advanced to the semi finals where they fell to Carson. We’ve been hearing a lot of talk out of Downey. Now we’ll see what they have right out of the chute. San Pedro comes out with the victory.

San Pedro 27 Downey 20

Saturday August 29

Gahr (0-0) at California (0-0) at Pioneer

Dick Torres Stadium will see plenty of action this year. With the field at Cal  being renovated there will be games at Pioneer Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Cal has depth and some big boys up front. The Condors also have some talent at the skill positions. They should have enough to flatten Gahr.

California 21 Gahr 10
