The TEN

The TEN

(“The TEN” is not a top ten but ten items worth being included in “The TEN”)

1.) Los Angeles Dodgers use 20th overall selection in MLB Draft to select shortstop Gavin Lux, 18, Wisconsin high schooler. With the 31st pick they took Will Smith, catcher, out of Louisville, and Jordan Sheffield, right handed pitcher, at 36.

2.) “I hope the administration and the community appreciate what they have in this coach.”—MVS commenter “Pac 5 Scout” on West Covina HC Mike Maggiore

3.) “Dodgers should bring in boo machine for Utley at home games.”—Molly Knight

4.) Former Arroyo quarterback Brian Partida (2006-2007: 24-games, 41-TD passes, 17-Ints, 4,474 yards, 11-Tds rushing) turns 26 today.

5.) The Chicago White Sox designate Matt Latos for assignment.

6.) In 2014 MVS staffer Joe Torosian asked on Facebook for a sleeper pick in his MLB fantasy draft. “Jurickson Profar” …El Monte baseball HC Steven Urena wrote back.

7.) “In today’s NBA, Willy Loman would not be called for Traveling.”—Dennis Miller

8.) Dodgers versus Giants, Kershaw verses Cueto, tonight at AT&T Park.

9.) San Dimas alum, Peter Lambert is currently pitching at Asheville in the South Atlantic League. He’s made 11 starts, has a 2-3 record, 2.29 ERA, 48 Ks, 7 Bbs, in 51-innings of work. Lambert was drafted in the second round by the Colorado Rockies in 2015.

10.) On this day in 1944 Joe Nuxhall became the youngest pitcher in major league history at the age of 15. He retired one batter before giving up five runs and not being able to get out of the inning. He finished high school and then went on to be a successful pitcher with a 14-year career that began in 1952.

"Anyone who has a kid trying out for his High School football team needs to read this book. Torosian has taken his 20 some years of reporting on Prep sports, mixed a healthy dose of San Gabriel Valley insider references and created a very readable first effort." "A page turner...I'm sorry it's over! Is a sequel in the works?" "Torosian does for high school football what Hemingway did for the Spanish Civil War...compelling look beyond the scoreboard and into the lives of players..." "A truly great story unfolds in the pages of Joe Torosian's first novel. With high school football at its core, the story of Dale Andrade shows how a young man grows in all aspects of his life thanks to being a part of a team and a football community." “This is a great read for everyone: from those who love high school football to those who have no idea about the game.” "This book brings you onto the field and into the locker room..." That Urena wouldn’t know a sleeper if it spooned him in bed! Haha. Remind me to give you our leagues tax ID number for the donations you make every year.

If coaching and teaching at West Covina for over 20 years does not show administration and community support, I don’t know what will. Even after a 4-6 season and missing the playoffs for the first time in 16 years, you don’t hear anybody calling for Maggiore’s job. Much love and support for Coach Maggiore in Bulldog country! I think him and Old Lou at Charter Oak are the longest tenured coaches in the SGV, that’s saying something these days!

Injuries sidelined for a few seasons but he’s been hotter than a fox in a forest fire since he’s come up.
