Andrew Almanzan ran wild in Chino’s win over Baldwin Park.

(Baldwin Park) It was good at times and ugly at times for the Chino Cowboys as they knocked off the Baldwin Park Braves 50-23 Friday night at Baldwin Park High School. Andrew Almanzan was stellar for Chino rushing 23 times for 327 yards and three touchdowns.

It was pretty for the Braves and ugly for the Cowboys when Christopher Vargas fielded the opening kickoff at his own 10 yard line and raced 90 yards to paydirt. Juan Cortez booted the extra point through and Baldwin Park had the early 7-0 lead.

Chino countered the score on their next drive when Daniel Pena capped an eight play 60 yard drive with a one yard plunge for the score. Andrew Almanzan sliced into the end zone on the two-point conversion to put the Cowboys up 8-7.

Early in the second quarter Baldwin Park took the lead back when Cortez booted a 21 yard field goal with 9:57 after an 11 play drive stalled at the Chino 3.

The Cowboys came right back on the ensuing drive to take the lead back 14-10. Almanzan got the call on a five yard run and the two-point conversion failed.

The score could have been more one sided as three penalties killed three potential scoring drives and Chino headed to the locker room with just a four point lead.

Early in the third period Almanzan got his second score of the night finishing off 70 yard scoring drive with a six yard run.

The Cowboys extended their lead to 20 when Willie Morris picked off Jacob Robles at the Brave 45 and returned in all the way to the end zone for a score.

Baldwin Park got the seven back on their next series when Robles found Nicholas Valenzuela deep over the middle for 77 yards and the touchdown.

Almanzan got his third score with 6:36 left in the final frame on a 12 yard run. Opening the holes for Almanzan were Samuel Cole, Brandon Serrano, Steven Lopez, Aure Charles and Tevita Fuimaono.

As a team the Cowboys rushed for 539 total yards including Almanzan’s 327 and  Pena’s 156 with two scores.

Baldwin Park got it’s final score on the night when Robles found Fernando Carrillo on a slant  from 15 yards away. Robles completed three of nine passes for 92 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

On the ground for the Braves David Covarrubias carried the ball 13 time for 123 yards. Plowing the road for Covarrubias were Jason Reyna, Richard Perez, Kevin Ramirez, Noe Hernandez and Andrew Perez.

Chino returns home next week to host Hillcrest while Baldwin Park stays at home to take on Saddleback Valley Christian.
