(South Pasadena)—The Monrovia Wildcats claimed the Rio Hondo League Championship Friday evening, as they dominated host South Pasadena and beat the Tigers, 46-16,in front of a large homecoming crowd at Ray Solari Stadium.

Monrovia (6-4, 5-0) was guided by senior quarterback Richie Schroeder, who completed 20 of 23 pass attempts for 370 yards and five touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Elijah Hall was the recipient of three Schroeder scoring strikes, while senior wide out Todd Smith and junior running back Alfonso Castillo caught one scoring ball apiece. In addition to his passing prowess, Schroeder added a 1-yard scoring run, which served to punctuate the Wildcat victory.

South Pasadena (7-3, 3-2), experienced more than their share of mishaps and bad luck. The Tigers finally got on the board midway through the second quarter of play, when sophomore kicker Justin Huff converted a 20 yard field goal attempt. This kick made the score 13-3, Monrovia, with 9:15 remaining in the first half of play.

Unfortunately, this was as close as the Tigers would get to a victory. South Pasadena added a pair of passing touchdowns to wide receiver Jalen Ross…one by quarterback Adam Arellano, and one by quarterback Sidney Luna-Long… but never really mounted much of a threat to the Monrovia Wildcats.

The Wildcats will enter the CIF playoffs as the Rio Hondo league’s number one seed. The second and third playoff spots are to be determined.
