(La Mirada) — Edison’s Griffin O’Connor and and Jack Carmichael combine for five touchdowns in the Chargers 44-24 win over La Mirada in the Division 3 CIFSS final Friday night at La Mirada high school.

To start the game, both teams opened by turning the ball over. The Edison offense was halted when O’Connor’s pass was intercepted by Shaun Swayne. However, the Charger defense regained possession when Tristan Meyer fumbled the ball which was recovered by Isaiah Palmer.

Four plays later, Carmichael scored the game’s first touchdown when he took the handoff and slipped his way for the 21-yard score, giving his team the early lead.

After exchanging punts, the Matadors put their first points on the board when Brandon Petruescu spilt the uprights on a 22-yard field goal before the first quarter ended.

The Chargers responded midway through the second frame when O’connor connected with Ej Ginnis for the 14-yard score, jumping out to a 14-3 lead with 7:31 left in the half.

Following the touchdown, La Mirada punched back with a touchdown of their own when Meyer ended an 11 play drive with a quarterback sneak, upping the score at 14-10 with 3:45 left in the first half.

On the ensuing possession, Edison took less than 90 seconds to drive down the field using three plays to have Carmichael cross the end zone for his second rushing touchdown of the night. Fnally, just before the half ended, the Chargers added another rushing score, this time O’cononor scrambled his was for six before halftime.

At the break Edison jumped out to a 28-10 lead.

The Matadors started the second half with the ball and gained momentum with Nick Hernandez carrying the load but their hopes of scoring were stopped when Mccade Barrett intercepted Meyer’s pass and returned it for a 90-yard pick six.

The Matadors finally answered back late in the third quarter when Jeremy Clark took Meyer’s pass and scored from 13-yards out. The offense tried for two, but Edison picked off another Meyer pass.

On the ensuing kickoff, La Mirada rolled the dice and went for an onside kick which was recovered by the Matadors on the Edison 41. Three plays later Clark and Meyer hooked up again for the touchdown. After the two-point conversion was successful, La Mirada was down 34-24 with 3:16 left in the quarter.

The Charger offense tried to return the favor with a touchdown of their own but settled for a 30-yard field goal made by Jack Morrell.

The Matadors drove down the field on their next possession but they were stuffed on a fourth and goal, giving the ball back to the Edison.

The Chargers put the game away when O’Connor connected with David Atencio who weaved his way through the La Mirada defense for an 88-yard catch and run. On the very next play, O’Connor walked into the end zone for the final touchdown.

With the win, Edison looks to get a bid in the California State playoffs next week.

The Edison O-Line set the tempo of this game. They opening big holes for the running backs and the QB, they were well prepared for La Mirada and unlike the mistake we made a few weeks ago, the D’s secondary was all over Hicks, not giving Meyer a chance at a big play. I would like to Congratulate my friend AL G. the O-line coach, Dave W. and the Edison Chargers on a great Win, 2016 SS CIF D3 Champions.
