Maryssa Black led a fourth quarter rally but Monrovia came up short
(Monrovia) – Sierra Vista held off a late Monrovia charge to beat the Lady Cats 47-46 Saturday night in the second round of the CIF Division 3A playoffs.
The Lady Dons led 35-30 heading into the final frame but Monrovia went on a 14-7 run to take a 44-42 advantage. The Lady Cats still led 46-44 when Sierra Vista’s Dakota Fabro knocked down a three point shot with less than a minute left to put the Lady Dons up by one.
Sierra Vista didn’t score the rest of the way but Monrovia missed a shot, a free throw and finally a half court heave at the buzzer by September Offutt and the Lady Dons survived.
Maryssa Black led the fourth quarter rally for the M-Town ladies with a driving lay up and our consecutive free throws. Ashley Cook also had a couple of big baskets down the stretch.
In addition to Fabro’s three, Crystal Avila scored six points for Sierra Vista in the fourth period including a short jumper in the lane that tied it at 44.
SV looked to pull away early jumping out to a 14-6 lead after one. A pressing defense flustered Monrovia as the Lady Dons turned several turnovers into easy baskets. Valeria Rivera scored six in the opening quarter and Jessica Rivera scored five including a bomb from downtown Monrovia.
Cook hit a long trey and scored five in the second and Paulina Pasillas netted a pair of baskets as the Lady Cats battled back to tie it at 20 at the half.
SV tightened up the defensive screws again in the third and emerged with a five point lead through three.
The lead exchanged hands three times in the final frame before Sierra Vista held on. Fabro was the only SV player in double figures with 13. Avila had 9 and Valeria Rivera had 8. Black led Monrovia with 13, Cook scored 12 and Pasillas had 10.
Next up for Sierra Vista is a date with Santa Margarita Wednesday night.
