(Pasadena) – Pasadena got 17 points from both Tyler Barber and Chris Bridges and went on to beat Keppel 63-48 Friday night before a standing room only crowd at Muir High School. With the victory the Bulldogs advanced to the CIF Division 2A Final Saturday at the Honda Center against Eisenhower.
After leading by three at the end of one, George Toyama knocked down a pair of three pointers in the second period as PHS outscored Keppel 17-10 in the quarter to move out to a 10 point lead at the break.
Jordan Young hit a pair of threes in the second period as well to keep the Aztecs breathing.
Barber came out on fire in the third period hitting four consecutive baskets to open the quarter. But Timmy Wong hit one from long distance and Sam Thim scored 7 points in the period for Keppel and Pasadena only increased its lead by one to 11 after three.
Keppel was forced to foul in the fourth quarter but Pasadena didn’t accommodate them. The Bulldogs were perfect from the line in the final frame as they buried all 12 free throws they attempted. Barber and Bridges were both 4 for 4 and Nick Holden hit a pair.
Wong scored 19 for the Aztecs to lead all scorers but it wasn’t easy.
“We made him work for everything he got tonight,” said Pasadena Coach Tim Tucker. “That was the key. Our defense really played well tonight. Bridges came up with some big steals for us in the third quarter and Tyler (Barber) hit some key shots.”
The Aztecs had only four players in the scoring column. Justin Young had 11, Thim scored 10 and Jordan Young finished with 8.
Freshman Brandon Jolley scored 10 points in the first half for Pasadena and was in double figures with 12. Toyama had 7 and Holden 6.
Eisenhower knocked off Damien to earn the right to face Pasadena in the 2A final.
“We knew Eisenhower would be there. There a good team,” Tucker said. “But we’re really confident right now.”
