(Covina) – Charter Oak intercepted Northview quarterback Steven Comstock five times and forced seven turnovers overall in a 49-14 rout of the Vikings Friday night to kick off the 2017 season.

The Chargers went up 35-0 in the first quarter and led 49-7 at the half. There was a running clock in the fourth quarter.

Joseph Romero got the Chargers off and running early in the first when he stepped in front of a Comstock pass and returned it to the Northview five-yard line. On the next play Jermaine Braddock raced in from the five for the first score.

On Northview’s next possession Isaiah Hamilton intercepted a pass and CO set up shop at their own 37. Five plays later Matt Chavez scored on a five-yard run to put Charter Oak up two scores.

Hamilton picked off another pass on the next possession but this time Hamilton took it to the house going 50 yards and with 3:30 still left in the first it was 21-0.

The Chargers cashed in on a Northview fumble just over a minute later when JP Palacious hit Michael Anyanwu on a ten-yard TD strike.

The Vikings went three and out on the next series and after a punt return Charter Oak was in business again. Chavez got his second score of the night – a 27-yard romp that effectively iced the game. There were still 35 seconds left in the first quarter but at 35-0 everybody on Covina Blvd. knew this one was over.

The Chargers added a couple more scores in the second quarter as Braddock caught a six-yard TD pass from Palacious and Chavez picked up his third of the night on a four-yard run. Northview finally broke through with 3:07 remaining in the first half when Comstock found Jimmy Amezquita behind the Charter Oak secondary for a 48-yard touchdown pass.

The Chargers emptied their bench in the second half as head coach Lou Farrar gave his twos and threes some playing time.

The Vikings scored the final touchdown of the night in the running clock fourth quarter when Comstock broke a couple of tackles and rumbled 21 yards down the left sideline.

Chavez finished with 110 yards and three touchdowns on ten carries for CO. Braddock had one touchdown running and one receiving and Hamilton had two picks and a score.

Comstock, who has committed to Fresno State, stayed in to the bitter end, threw for one and ran for one but was hurt but the five interceptions.

Next up for Charter Oak is a date at Colony next Friday night while Northview will travel to Rosemead.
