Baldwin Park Ruins Ceniceros’ El Monte Debut

Jacob Robles fires four td passes in the opener against El Monte.

(South El Monte) The Baldwin Park Braves traveled to South El Monte to take on the El Monte Lions in the season opener for both schools. In the first game of the Jesse Ceniceros era at El Monte the Lions put up 362 yards rushing and three scores but it wasn’t enough as Baldwin Park went aerial and out scored El Monte 36-22 Friday night.

The Braves were the first to score on night needing only one play on their first offensive series. Jacob Robles fired an out to Christopher Vargas and Vargas got to the corner, and outraced the Lion defense 81 yards for the score. The extra point was missed and Baldwin Park led 6-0 with 7:19 left in the first quarter.

Baldwin Park extended their lead to 14-0 on a 27 yard pass from Robles to Vargas again. A. Ramirez punched the two point conversion in from three yards and with 2:52 left in the first half the Lions were down 14-0.

Abel Ochoa scores twice for the Lions.

The score remained 14-0 until 3:45 left in the third quarter when Nathan Velasquez punched across the goal line from a yard out. Abel Cueva sliced across the goal line for the two point conversion to cut the lead to 14-8.

Baldwin Park answered  right back with a score of their own need only two plays to cover 70 yards. The Robles to Vargas connection was good again this time on a catch and run for 70 yards.

Early in the final frame the Lions got their second score traveling 54 yards on six plays. Abel Ochoa got his first score of the evening on a 20 yard run. The two point conversion failed this time and El Monte trailed by six.

The Braves again answered the Lion score with their longest scoring drive using six plays to go 65 yards. Ramirez got the honors for this one scoring on a four yard run pushing the lead back up to 28-14.

The Ceniceros double wing got rolling again in the fourth quarter going four plays on 52 yards with Ochoa getting his second score of the night. Ochoa finished the night gaining 125 yards on 20 carries and the two scores.

Baldwin Park put the game out of reach with 8:26 left in the fourth. Robles found who else, Vargas in the flat again and Vargas did the rest bolting 62 yards to paydirt.

Robles completed five of nine passes for 249 yards and four scores and added 47 yards on 11 carries. Vargas caught all five of Robles’ passes and the four scores.

The Lions got 176 yards on 21 carries from Cueva and eight carries and 45 yard from M. Figueroa.

Next week El Monte will take on Southlands Christian at Diamond Bar High School. Baldwin Park will travel east to take on Chino.

at the end of the day, coaches coach, players play. i was at the game & it wasn’t pretty but Bp went home with the W. el monte hurt themselves quite a bit, with turnovers & big penalties. things that are more than common for everyone playing there 1st game of the year.

I find it really sad that after one game you El Monte fans have lost faith. This coach changed EVERYTHING about the team and did so working against the clock. He didn’t have a lot of time to work with these kids and y’all acting like he’s the worst coach out there. One thing I see with EM is regardless of what happens y’all fans will never be happy with ANYTHING. Same went for the past coaches. All you fans do is complain. It’s no wonder coaches don’t want anything to do with EM. Good Luck to the Lions and Coaches.

This was the 1st game of the season, lets not talk about maxpreps ranks until at least a few games before there is some real data for the computers to use.

Sometimes I have to really laugh. The Braves are ranked by Maxpreps 545 and El Monte is 824, thats 279 spots. El Monte should have lost by 3/4 scores; not 2 scores. If it had been the other coach it might have been worse. El Monte did not have that many starter returning.

Just because you took one team to the finals with double wing doesn’t mean you will again. Besides, it was only one player doing all the work with that team. DELETED the coaches and their stupid ways. Hope you guys lose every game. retire this sorry DELETED coach

Lion’s Roar, I haven’t seen that Torch light up in front of El Monte High School since 1960. That’s the last time you won a football game.
