Big Evening for Eagles, SEM Routs View, 35-8

By Rich Whittington

(The Swamp)—The South El Monte Eagles celebrated homecoming in a grand fashion Friday evening, as they blasted the visiting Mountain View Vikings, 35-8, at South El Monte High School.

The evening was dedicated to magical experiences as a Disney-themed presentation was used to coronate the 2017 Homecoming King and Queen. This magic pored over onto the football field as well, as a trio of seniors led the Eagles to victory.

South El Monte, 5-0, 1-0 in the Mission Valley League, was led by senior running back, Sal Tovar. Tovar accounted for three rushing touchdowns. Additionally, Tovar would recover a fumble, returning it 58-yards to set up another score. No to be outdone, senior quarterback, Daniel Olmos connected with senior Jarvis Godinez for two passing scores. The balance of the Eagles scoring was provided by kicker Gasper Beltran, who converted all five of his point-after attempts.

The Eagles defense also proved themselves noteworthy, holding Mountain View to 115 yards of total offense. In addition to Tovar’s fumble recovery and return, the defense registered two sacks of Vikings quarterback, Aaron Borrayo. The sacks, provided by AJ Carreon, and Mark Sosa, accounted for yardage losses of 20 and 10-yards, respectively. Other noteworthy performances were produced by Anthony Gomez, who recovered the ball after a blocked field goal attempt, and Victor Gonzalez, who recovered another View fumble.

Mountain View, 3-2, 0-1, finally got on the board in the fourth quarter. With 5:23 remaining in the contest, Borrayo connected with running back David Jimenez on a 20-yard touchdown strike. The Vikings added a 2-Point Conversion courtesy of fullback Juan Media.

South El Monte’s next contest is scheduled for 9/29/17. The Eagles will travel to Gabrielino, to battle…wait for it…the Eagles. Also on 9/29/17, Mountain View will host the El Monte Lions. Kick-off for both contests is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.
