Game Night: Week 5

Alex Montoya and the Arroyo Knights clash with Rosemead Friday night

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m unless otherwise indicated:

Thursday 9/28

Pasadena Poly (3-1-1) at Maranatha (4-1)

The Minutemen had a wake up call last week against Brentwood in their first loss. Pasadena Poly hasn’t lost since the opener against Temple City. Both teams need a win heading into league play next week. It’s close until the fourth when Maranatha makes a play. Minutemen come out on top.

Maranatha 21 Pasadena Poly 17

Friday 9/29

Mission Valley League

South El Monte (5-0) at Gabrielino (1-3)

Last Year: South El Monte 56-14

Look at year’s score and you’re probably looking at this year’s score. South El Monte will be tested but it won’t be this week. That will be next week against Arroyo. South jumps on top early and never lets up. Sal Tovar and company have a field day.

South El Monte 51 Gabrielino 7

Arroyo (5-0) at Rosemead (1-4)

Last Year: Arroyo 16-0

The Knights are as good as last year’s CIF Championship team and the Panthers, well…not so much. Rosemead did get its first win last week over Marshall but the Marshall Eagles aren’t exactly the Philadelphia Eagles. Arroyo is a different animal. The Knights have outscored their last two opponents 105-0. This game is always a must see every year because of the rivalry. It won’t be this year. Arroyo wins…big

Arroyo 49 Rosemead 13

El Monte (2-2) at Mt. View (3-2)

Last Year: El Monte 34-6

Mt. View brings a winning record into the contest. The Vikings have been chewing up yardage on the ground. El Monte, running Jesse Ceniceros’  double wing, has been doing damage pounding it as well. The Lions have been up and down so far this year however winning two and losing two. They’ll be up in this one. If you have a dinner date this is one you’ll want to see. With both teams handing the ball off it should be over in an hour and a half. Lions get the victory.

El Monte 31 Mt. View 20

Pacific League

Burroughs (2-1) at Arcadia (2-2)

Last Year: Arcadia 37-27

Arcadia is coming off an impressive Pacific League opening win over Muir while Burroughs held off Pasadena. For the Apaches its just a matter of all the talent coming together. When that happens they can be dangerous. Burroughs can score as it proved last week. The Indians only loss came at the hands of Diamond Ranch. These two teams always put on good show and Friday night should be no exception. Arcadia survives a shootout.

Arcadia 35 Burroughs 31

Muir (2-2) at Crescenta Valley (4-0) (Glendale)

Last Year: Crescenta Valley 33-0

The Falcons are on a roll. They started off the season in Florida with a win and haven’t stopped since. CV followed up the Zero Week win with a victory over a solid Golden Valley team in week one. Muir needs a victory and a few more as the Mustangs try to scramble for a playoff spot. But they won’t get one here. Crescenta Valley establishes an early lead and pulls away in the second half.

Crescenta Valley 38 Muir 14

California (2-2) at San Dimas (2-2)

Last Year: San Dimas 41-14

The Saints seem to have gotten back on track with a 50-12 rout of Diamond Bar last week after two straight losses. San Dimas opens Valle Vista League play next week against Covina and wants a win over Cal to gear up. The Condors have won their last two after opening with a pair of losses to Schurr and Mayfair. Cal will hang around for awhile. The Condors have shown that they can compete, however in the end the Saints will walk off of their home field with a win.

San Dimas 42 California 21

Pomona (1-4) at Azusa (1-3) (Citrus College)

Last Year: Azusa 42-27

The Aztecs are trying to halt a three game losing streak before opening Montview League play next week. Pomona has lost four out of five after getting shutout by Northview last week. The Red Devils won the Miramonte last year and needs some momentum going into league action this season. Pomona showed off some of its weapons scoring 41 in an overtime win over El Rancho for its only victory of the year. The Devils will need to put up some points again to hold off Azusa. They should be able to just that.

Pomona 35 Azusa 28

No, it’s going to be more like South El Monte 49, Gabrielino 0. Tongva Nation will probably be lucky to score in this one. Have fun, anyway.

Future Gong Show contestant did a “Look at me Mom” move that DQed him from the game and the next. But the bright side is coaches like Saban and Clay Helton love those me first studs.

I threw a dart and came up sticking Cal-San Dimas. Is San Dimas down so far this year that Cal beats them? Why has Cal once a yearly playoff team fallen so low? Nice new campus stadium and all. After Holman’s great first season San Dimas has looked very beatable to the tune that doormat Ontario crushed them earlier this season. Maybe if Cal starts winning it can get some of its La Serna guys back.

He definitely would have been able to Pad his stats this game but in reality it will just ensure he is healthy for the more important games coming up.
