1. Erin Popovich, the wife of long time San Antonio Spurs Coach Greg Popovich, passed away at the age of 67 after an extended illness. Assistant Ettore Messina took over the coaching duties for Game 3 of the Western Conference playoff series against Golden State.

2. The 2018 NFL schedule is released. The Philadelphia Eagles will kick off the season against the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night September 6.

3. Joel Embiid returns to the lineup to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 128-108 win over the Miami Heat and a 2-1 series lead in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

4. Former Dodger outfielder Trayce Thompson joined his fourth team this year when he was sold by Oakland to the Chicago White Sox.

5. The Cincinnati Reds fired manager Bryan Price Thursday after a 3-15 start.

6. Dodger catcher Yasmani Grandal is tied for the NL lead in batting average at .352. Dodger outfielder Matt Kemp is fifth at .347.

7. The New York Giants released wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

8. Dwight Freeney, a seven-time Pro Bowler who had 125.5 sacks in a 16-year NFL career, will sign a one-day contract with the Indianapolis Colts and then retire.

9. The South El Monte Lady Eagles softball team is 14-1 overall and 6-0 in the MVL.

10. On this day in 1996 USC receiver Keyshawn Johnson was the first pick in the NFL draft by the New York Jets.

    Greg Popovich is one of the NBA’s greatest coaches and a good man as well. We wish him comfort and strength at this difficult time.
