    Cantwell can’t do what Arcadia has done. In order to do what Arcadia did you have to have the support of the school administration. At one point in time Cantwell had that support. Look at the success of their basketball program several years ago.

    You bring up Buena park and La Mirada. They had the support of their administrations That support does not exist anymore. Those schools can’t compete at the higher levels with just the kids from the neighborhood. Demographics in those cities has changed and the schools are doing nothing to attract students to attend those schools.

    Skill positions filled with black athletes? Los Altos has had one kid in the last 10 years, so not sure how you lump them into that boat…

    Cantwell can always go the Arcadia route. Go get great players somehow. Im always puzzled how some schools accomplish this feat. Arcadia with a Black population of a tick over 1% has their skill positions filled by Black athletes. Lots and lots. I can see this happening at Alabama and Georgia but at a public school in Arcadia? What’s the trick so I can tell my Cantwell chums. My only thought is it often blows up like at Buena Park, La Mirada, Los Altos even Charter Oak is missing a boat load of recruits. Where did they all go? To Bonita and Northview?

    I remember playing passing league against Ron Cuccia and L.A.Wilson in summer of 1977 in a 7 on 7 league at Bell High School, I played for Pioneer, the Mules beat us 28 to 14, those were fun days.

    You’re right! Silly you! Nobody cares what you think regarding this. This is my Alma Mater. Do you really think a score to a game is going to change anything? Mind your business. Go back in your basement and play your video games. This is for the adults that are trying to change the atmosphere at our school. Butt out..

    This is a sports blog that is why we are talking about the athletic department at Cantwell.

    I agree 100% academics first however with that being said athletics plays a big part in the overall picture of a high school especially at a private high school where you are competing with other privates for enrollment. There is no doubt in my mind that the current mess of an athletic department will hurt Cantwells overall ability to attract and retain not just athletes but students in general. Make no mistake kids, athlete or not, want to go to a school that not only is an academic institution but has a good proud sports program.

    Some of your topics make absolutely no sense. Why the good points I brought up are garbage leaves me confused?? I have helped out with this situation. I have left several voice messages for the admin with no return calls. I was a founding member of the Booster club a few years back only to be told the school wanted us to do the work with little to no help and wanted sole control over everything.

    Lastly Cantwell is not one of the finer private schools in terms of academics. Let’s face it the majority of kids in the area who want to be challenged academically go elsewhere Loyola, Ramona Convent, Mayfield, Bosco Tech etc.

    You will get your wish as I am done with my Alma Mater.

    C88: You say “stay away from Cantwell, stop talking about Cantwell, Cantwell is about Education first”. Silly me I thought this was a football blog not an edu.com site. If you expect a boat lot of atta boys after losing 63-0 in a shortened FOOTBALL game it is you that needs to stay away from football blogs.

    @Cantwell Alum,
    The first thing that needs to be done is you need to stop talking about Cantwell and more importantly, stay away from Cantwell. All your examples of how good things were are ridiculous. If you really care then you would do your best at helping. All your crap talking is just garbage. Cantwell is about Education first. It’s never been about winning football or basketball games. I hope that it continues to pump out kids to 4 year university’s. Nothing else really matters besides that. It’s amazing how people jump ship when things don’t go there way. I guess you forget about the things you learned when you were at Cantwell. Just be supportive especially at this time when our school needs it…

    Anony, Jeez all you do on ths blog is bag on every program. Give these kids from Cantwell some credit for sticking it out. The easiest thing to do is quit. Ask Marshall and Whittier Christian. At least these kids have the intestinal fortitude to play hard. Get a life anoinamus. Support the programs whether good or bad. They all put in the work.

    To Area Dad Cantwell Kids are not tough. I have seen them the past three years and they are ok for D13. The Die hard Cantwell Alumni left when the school went co-ed. Cantwell had success in basketball because of the 6″10 serves. Also Cathedral was the top Dog in Baseball League Champs every year until they moved them up.

    @Cardinal 88

    Not sure how involved you’ve been with the school the last 10-15 years but you are correct about one thing. The boys basketball team the last 8 years has been a top team in the state of California. However this year the head coach was pushed out (second coach in as many years) and the entire starting lineup transferred out

    You fail to mention the boys baseball team over the past 10 years or so has sent numerous kids off to play college ball, won several league championships, played for a CIF title. This year their top returning player a senior who was committed to the University of Miami transferred out.

    The boys football team just 5-6 years ago was beating local public schools Schurr, Bell Gardens, as well as a Whittier Christian, Monrovia, El Segundo etc. Without the exodus of players they would have no doubt had a good season. Never has football been in the state of disarray as it is now. As of 1 week ago the roster listed 20 players on the Varsity team with several of them being freshmen who should be playing freshman ball. I have serious doubts if they can finish the season.

    Girls Softball the last 15 years has been a perennial league contender, won 2 CIF championships, played for another CIF championship and lost, sent several players to play division 1 college softball. Last year the team was 1-23.

    Girls basketball for the past 15-20 years can be counted on the win 20 games and make a deep run in the playoffs. They won a CIF title and played for and lost another CIF title. The current coach will more than likely not return next season as there as absolutely to support for athletics.

    Two years ago alumni banded together and started up the Cardinal Booster program to help further assist the student athlete and athletic department. The booster club was creating some good momentum, getting alumni back involved, basketball, baseball and football games were packed. Several events were held to raise funds for the athletic department. The current admin ended the Booster club as they wanted sole control of the direction of the program although alumni volunteers were doing all the work.

    For the area ELA/Montebello/Western SGV the athletic program was not average. So you tell me what’s next?

    Cantwell people? All this complaining about these coaches and AD’s is garbage. You can’t cry after the facts. Our school is not known for sports. With the exception of basketball for a few years with Zedan our school is just average in sports. That’s doesn’t mean we don’t have great kids though. We do have some exceptional athletes. But we have always been very thin in terms of back ups etc.
    The only way we will see a difference is if we come together in numbers. Amat, Mater Dei, Bosco and even ST Paul have great booster and alumni followings. So let’s stop talking trash and start moving the trash. This is the only way if you truly care about the school. Crying is for babies. Complaining is girls.. That’s not what we’re about..

    In 1977 Lincoln High played Vic Cuccia’s Franklin juggernaut. Halftime score was 63-0. Lincoln refused to come out of the locker room at the half. The story was national news. Opinions both pro and con and praise and hate aimed at Cuccia. His son was QB so he was charged with scoring to make his sons stats the best in the nation. Point being it humiliated the proud Lincoln Heights community and they blamed themselves and they vowed never to let that happen again. The community rallied around the team and while not world beaters have had very competitive teams and the occasional champion since. Cantwell can do the same. Come together to figure out what is happening or if you listen to others you can refuse to come out of the locker room. Sometimes losing a game big along with a physical whopping is a lot better that quitting and going home. Big congrats to the Cantwell Cardinals that toughed it out. You will be better for it.

    I do know that Mater Dei and Bosco don’t have to help anybody with tuition, because there is a thick stream of applicants trying to get on those rosters. What about the other Trinity schools (Servite, J-Serra, O-Lu and SM)? Are these guys being told to pony-up money for the priest abuse fund too? If so, what a sad state of affairs: kids have to pay for what happened to kids.
