@ Grim Reaper: You’ve raised some excellent points. We’re facing those issues, and more, in local high school athletics, and football appears to be the most impacted sport.
Wasn’t the reasoning for the crappy new system to prevent blowout?
It’s a numbers game now. The Pasadena Unified School District is the reason for the demise of Blair and the most part the glory years of Muir and PHS. It’s probably one of the worst run school districts in L.A. County. They are having to close schools because enrollment numbers have gotten so low. One of the elementary schools barely has a hundred students. People get mad at players leaving Pasadena and going to private schools or Arcadia. What parent wouldn’t take a better option for their kid.
Re sportsdad and the new MLV league
Mark Keppel would still be a doormat and lose.
It will not be surprising to see Keppel disband football .
Re playoffs system.
my comment was not necessarily opposed to it. The previous system was geographically oriented which has its own pluses and minuses. I have been on long trips to places like Paso Robles and Lompoc for a playoff game you knew you were going to lose, a 6-8 hour car ride. So having games no more than an hour away was good.
The current system of dropping teams until they win and then up divisioning them will result in many teams that have not won anything for years to have a shot someday. They will still have to win in a league that may include other teams, so the question is if the team is disbanded for lack of interest or is able to rally to win and increase interest. That is a crap shoot.
I think the CIF was trying to address the shrinking team sizes as various issues with football keep getting worse. Demographics where ever higher percentages of the the student body come from cultures that do not play football makes fielding a team ever more of a challenge.
We see the same phenomenon arising with pro sports where football and baseball fans are getting ever older. The fans for MLS soccer is far younger. (note you can get a serious concussion in soccer and concussions are more likely, but ..)
Concussions may be the end of football given the increasing liabilities and regulations schools and leagues shoulder. Parents are more resistant to their kids playing tackle football. It is quite possible that super lawsuits will start to move down to the college and high school levels.
So that and other issues make football an endangered species. Will the CIF playoff schemes save football and prevent discontinuation of programs where we have seen freshmen, soph and JV teams go away little by little and team sizes shrink. I don’t think it will work but on the most incremental level. The days where every able bodied boy in high school went out for the team and every school had 60 players is long gone.
Blair High School was once the #1 team in the nation. (1969 I think) Now Blair has had no football team for a couple of years. you can argue various reasons but the plain fact is there is no team now.. Was it demographics, was it lack of winning, was it lack of interest or ? who knows but how many times can you lose games 70-0, before all the negatives add up to no team. For every El Monte resurgence there are several Blairs that are festering.
That is the big question. Can Football survive in the lower divisions? And if not will the higher divisions have shrinking rosters to the point that only private school football academies that offer scholarships and recruit will the the only game in town.
It’s not crying when you see something that you’d like to see improved. This is a blog where people discuss things and offer opinions not just shut up because Mr. Football doesn’t agree with them and wants to belittle them with his girl tears crap. Peace Out
Mr. Football
Love the system I’m not crying. Love the transfer rules
Don’t have No problems with CIF! Love it!
Way to much crying about the current system. If you want your kid to make the playoffs every year send him to a D2 thru 4 team. They all get in. He will sit on the bench but so what. If you want to see your kid fight then put him on a El Rancho or a Bell Gardens type. They will be coached up and will see the field on game day if they practice hard, make an effort, make grades and improve. Take your pick and quit yer girl tears.
Grim Reaper
I could not agree with you more! I made the same argument when CIF changed the format, virtually verbatim. There are so many teams in the wrong divisions that it makes it unfair. Also, dont forget the first year of the division restructuring, CIF had it so wrong that there were teams in lower divisions killing everyone that eventually were move up four tiers to where they started. I see teams in division four now that started in division eight three years ago. And it seems that everyone is forgetting the effects enrollment has on the quality of the team. Currently and in the past I have seen teams where one school has an enrollment of 1300 vs a school of 3700. I see it this year again, how are teams to compete? Sometimes those small teams win, but in the long run it makes it tough.
You can always schedule your rivals in non league games like South Hills did with West Covina and Charter Oak before they were put in the same league with Charter. Only thing you would have to find a way to keep the Turkey Tussle the last game of the season. Burroughs has been really good for a good 5-6 years I wouldn’t move them because of one bad year.
CIF playoff format is not fair but by dropping teams division by division is a way that if they can just win enough games to qualify in the lower and lower divisions eventually they will win when they get in the playoffs. And yes it is hard if you have a once in a decade or longer team show up and win big. CIF will reward that with an up rank to play teams that are bigger and stronger.
San Marino in 2015 had such a team when they went to the state bowl game. From a small public school they were then thrown to the wolves to play big schools with 60-70man rosters and privates that recruit and have 300 lb plus Samoan linemen playing against kids that are lucky to weight 200 on a good day. Somehow they beat Charter Oaks who had been down divisioned in 2015 and Sierra Canyon who recruits the sons of NFL players.. As a reward for beating them, they got Bishop Diego in 2017 and down divsiioned two more divisions lower..
The 2016 and 2017 teams paid for 2015s successes.
And someday a future team will benefit from prior years bad records.
The real losers are the lower division teams that end up in leagues with higher division teams.. They never seem to get out of league to qualify for playoffs even when they are a Div 12 or 13 team.
I agree with that and it helps them be tested before the playoffs if they’re good enough to get in. I was speaking with a coach from St. Bernard and he broke down the whole calpreps stats and how your strength of schedule comes into play as far as who gets in. But cif puts a high pedestal on how you do in league. But I agree Muir is in one league and PHS is in another and one has been vastly better then the other through the years BUT you can’t break that up because that’s tradition…. i’m assuming that’s the reason why they wont break up the rio hondo league…even though they know they should and bridging the rio hondo and Pacific wont be that much travel between the teams but… it’s tradition and people dont like change for the better. People want Muir to have a shot in the playoffs. They gotta do better than 4th place. Muir use to be the cream of the crop in the Pacific. Only team that would give them trouble was Arcadia and Burbank or Burroughs or never both. CV use to not even be in the conversation. And monrovia took 2nd in their league so they get in. Dont agree with a 16th seed but whatever they’re in. Muir needs to return to greatness that they once were. Good luck to all the local teams in the playoffs. I want our teams to beat the teams out in the desert, the OC, and boondocks of the southern section
That league works only change Burroughs and put them in the RHL and keep CV,MHS, SM, Muir, Burbank, and Arcadia. Now that’s a juggernaut of a league for the pacific
You must be a Muir Hater! Reguardless I’m just using them as example. Come on dude how can anyone justify a system where 2-8 gets you into the playoffs. If Pasadena is not good enough to be in the same division as Muir then no way should they be in the same league. Why should a D4 school get s free pass to the playoffs because they are in a League with D10 and lower schools. That’s a screwed up system. When my son was at Monrovia it was no fun watching them beat up on every team in their league with San Marino being the exception. I just think you put teams in leagues with teams within their division it’s a lot more fair. Again I have no horse in the race just saying there’s a better way!
@ Anonymous
Who is Quiet? I No you not talking to me because you not talking
About nothing! They have ALWAYS DID THE PLAYOFFS BY
LEAGUE REMEMBER 1-3 goes to the Playoffs. Then everyone complain because
Of the scores. You had games like Bassett vs Paraclete come on man!
@ Sportsdad
If you are just a sports fan then you can appreciate the fact
That Pasadena got into the playoffs. When was the last time Pasadena got
In? Muir blew out Pasadena they play in different divisions
Muir would probably blow out every team in the same division that Pasadena plays in and win it all as well. We know this already. If Pasadena Division allows 5th so let it be.
Why we just can’t be happy for the teams that are in.
Muir will NEVER go to the playoffs unless they play in a Division that
allows 4th place teams. That is the new norm for a whole lot of teams in
CIF PERIOD! Also there has never been a system that nobody likes
When it comes to the Playoffs and he’ll Transfers as well
So no matter what CIF DOES NOBODY IS GOING TO
BE HAPPY EVER!
Why should it matter what division they were in last year? Last year’s team is not this year’s. (And even if they did happen to get knocked out in the first round, it was a crazy close game against a team that reached the state final.)
Look, Arcadia spent two years in Division 11. Division assignments are based on the previous two years. The first year under the current system followed a mediocre year for Arcadia and an awful year (in which they lost to Glendale, of all teams!) So, despite being considerably better than a couple of Division 5 and 7 playoff teams, they are playing in Division 8 due in part to the poor performance of guys who are now seniors in college.
I really don’t see any reason why specific teams should be assigned to divisions, instead of tying divisions to league finishes, without respect to the identity of that team. The winner of the Pacific League should be considered, by definition, a D5 team. If you’re able to beat the [redacted] out of Burbank, CV, and Muir, you’re pretty damn good, no matter what your predecessors were like.
You’re now quite as a church house mouse
Exactly! There letting teams in no matter record because there league standing. Not all leagues are equal. They need to fix the leagues if they are going to use league standings as there number 1 priority. Im fine with them using league standings, just make all the teams equal in each league. People are going to come on here and say, well that’s impossible. Than don’t use league standing. Head to head, commen opponants, and strength of schedule. That’s pretty easy! Come on people, it’s not that hard. CIF is getting a pass on this nonsense they call playoff format.
Way too much FYI I’m not a Muir guy. My kids went to Monrovia. I’m not against any school I just love high school football. So you say it’s ok for Pasadena who was the 5th place team in the Pacific and were blown out by Muir to be in the playoffs and Muir not. Charter Oak was also blown out by Muir and is in the playoffs. If you want true competitive equity do it by league not divisions. If you want to it by divisions do it after the season and not before.
@sportsdad
Muir plays in a different division. Why complain now you knew what division you were in before the season started. For most of you on here complaining about a broken system your only mad because your not in! It’s not the division that is broken the problem is the league you are in. A lot of teams know they are not going to the playoffs before the season even starts. You can’t place in your league so you know you can’t go to the playoffs. Muir took 4th so what are we talking about. Maybe teams should petition up so that they can find that division that takes 4th and 5th place teams before the season starts that way you can at least say you went to the playoffs
@stupid system
What are you talking about Arcadia played in d-11 last year and didn’t win it. Now they are in d-8 they are where they belong if they win it and go state they will be moved up. Right now they are where they supposed to be
@system broken
Get out of your league and join the Miramonte league. That league is looking for one or two teams. He’ll bring Wilson with you too!
