1. Alabama suspends three players, including starting offensive lineman Deonte Brown, from the College Football Playoff semifinal game at the Capital One Orange Bowl on Saturday, for violating team rules and policies.

2. The Seattle Seahawks signed head coach Pete Carroll to a new contract that runs through the 2021 season, a day after they beat the Kansas City Chiefs 38-31 to secure an NFC wild-card berth.

3. Clemson star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and two other players tested positive for a banned substance earlier this month and won’t play in Saturday’s College Football Playoff semifinal against Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl.

4. The Dodgers traded outfielders Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp, pitcher Alex Wood and catcher/infielder Kyle Farmer to the Cincinnati Reds Friday for two prospects and right-hander Homer Bailey. Bailey will subsequently be released.

5. The Tennessee Titans host the Indianapolis Colts Sunday for a spot in the AFC playoffs. Winner is in and the loser is out.

6. After losing to the New Orleans Saints 31-28 Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers are nearly eliminated from the AFC playoff picture. They would have to beat Cincinnati and have Baltimore lose and hope for an Indianapolis-Tennessee tie.

7. The Los Angeles Rams, 12-3, need to beat the San Francisco 49ers Sunday to secure a first round bye in the NFC playoffs as a number two seed.

8. AP College Basketball Top 5: 1. Duke 2. Michigan 3. Tennessee 4. Virginia 5. Kansas.

9. Former NFL linebacker and Detroit Lions GM Matt Millen had a successful heart transplant and is recovering in a New Jersey hospital.

    If the Dodgers would have got rid of Puig two years ago they would be back to back World Series champion. Grienkie would’ve stayed and pitched game seven instead of Darvish. Magic knows to get rid of the players if they make bad teammates. The Lakers could not get good players to play with Kobe and the Dodgers could not get good players to play with Puig. Addition by subtraction.

    If Pete Carroll hadn’t been extended, I hear he was going to offer himself to Clay Helton as director of recruiting and NCAA compliance.
