1. Jet-car speed racer Jessi Combs died in a crash in Oregon’s Alvord desert while trying to break a speed record. She was attempting to break the Women’s Land Speed record of 512 mph.

2. Steve Hunt, president, publisher and editor of the Daily Press, passed away Tuesday of congestive heart failure at the age of 64. Hunt, who also worked for the Pasadena Star News and the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, covered sports in Southern California in a newspaper career that spanned 45 years.

3. UCLA’s Dorian Thompson-Robinson completed just 8 of 26 passes and threw two picks as the Bruins fell to Cincinnati 24-14 Thursday night to open the 2019 season.

4. Police have issued an arrest warrant for Lakers center DeMarcus “Boogie” Cousins for a domestic violence charge in Mobile, Alabama.

5. Dodgers reliever Kenley Jansen has seven blown saves in 34 opportunities this year.

6. Travis Etienne ran for 205 yards and three touchdowns to lead number one Clemson to a 52-14 rout of Georgia Tech Thursday night.

7. The Rams beat the Houston Texans 22-10 Thursday night to finish the preseason at 2-2.

8. On this day in 1987 the late Kirby Puckett of the Minnesota Twins went six for six with two home runs in a 10-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

9. Former Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander (2005 NFL MVP) turns 42 today.

    Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Steve Hunt, a man who served in a noble profession. The man’s passing is ominously mirrored by the death of printed media in general, so we mourn both parties.
