(Covina) – Sean Jastrab hit Hunter Grosenbach with a six-yard touchdown pass with 33 seconds left to lift Bonita to a 15-14 win over Charter Oak Friday night at Lou Farrar Stadium.
The play was set up by a 24-yard strike from Jastrab to Grosenbach down to the one -yard line. After the Bearcats were pushed back five yards on a false start penalty Jastrab hit Grosenbach to tie it at 14. Diego Pesantes’ kick for the extra point provided the one-point margin.
The Chargers had one last shot but Rider Hackney intercepted Vincent Farrar with 17 seconds left to ice it for the Bearcats.
Bonita led 8-6 headed into the fourth quarter but Charter Oak grabbed the lead with 4;35 left on a four-yard burst by Jordan Gonzalez to cap an 11-play, 64 yard drive. Sam Mason hauled in a pass from Farrar for the two point conversion to make it 14-8 CO.
Bonita then marched 75 yards to regain the lead for good.
Bonita drove 72 yards on its second possession of the game with Connor Spina going the last two yards on a run up the middle. Grosenbach caught a pass for the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
It stayed that way until late in the second quarter when Mason turned a quick out from Farrar into a 74-yard sprint for a touchdown with 47 seconds left in the quarter. The Chargers missed on the two-point conversion leaving the score 8-6 at the half.
The game was delayed for about 30 minutes early in the second quarter when Charter Oak running back Reggie Haynes was taken off the field in an ambulance after an ankle injury.
Neither team scored in the third quarter before the game was decided in the fourth. There were 14 punts overall with each team booting it seven times. Charter Oak turned the ball over twice, both interceptions, while Bonita coughed it up once on its first possession of the game on a fumble.
Jastrab completed 20 of 37 for 257 yards and a touchdown. Grosenbach was his main target with 7 catches for 105 yards and the touchdown. For Charter Oak Farrrar was 8 of 20 for 126 yards and a touchdown and 2 interceptions. Mason caught 4 passes for 83 yards and a score.
Bonita improved to 2-1 with the victory while Charter Oak fell to 0-2
