Jonathan Bautista threw six touchdown passes in a big win for Sierra Vista

Cerritos— Sierra Vista quarterback Jonathan Bautista capped off his senior season Friday night by throwing six touchdown passes and carving up Cerritos’ defense for 543 yards through the air in the Dons’ 58-21 win over Cerritos at Gahr high school.

With the 2020 shortened season coming to a close, and with no playoffs, Bautista and his offense wanted to make one last impression in front of the Covid regulated fans by opening the game with a 55-yard touchdown pass. Shortly after the touchdown pass, the Dons’ defense recovered a fumble and took it back to the house for six.

With successful 2-point conversions following both scores, Sierra Vista quickly jumped to a 16-0 lead with 8:30 in the opening frame.

Their lead was then cut to nine once David Sagun connected with Deon Rebers running the slant, ending their 15-play drive midway through the second quarter.

Then on Sierra Vista’s ensuing possession, with a healthy balance of run and pass, the Dons extended their lead thanks to Bautista connecting with his receiver on a 54-yard bomb giving his team a 22-7 edge.

The offense continued to light up the scoreboard on their following possession after Cerritos failed at answering back. Bautista again found his receiver in stride, down the middle of the field, and took it 25 yards for the score.

Quickly after the Don’s defense intercepted Sagun’s pass attempt, Bautista and Co. only needed one double-reverse pass play to reach pay dirt covering 85 yards in the process.

Cerritos finally responded to the scoring onslaught just before intermission when Connor Defrain took the handoff and muscled his way into the end zone, putting the score at 36-14 Sierra Vista as halftime approached.

Following the break, Cerritos opened the second half with a touchdown when Joseph Quibrantar escaped the pocket and scrambled his way out to find Elijah Granflor running across the field, which scored the team’s touchdown.

However, that was all the scoring for Cerritos for the remainder of the night.

Sierra Vista closed the door on any chance of a Cerritos comeback as they scored 22 unanswered points on consecutive drives. Bautista was responsible for two of the touchdowns as the third was a rushing score.

“I wish I was able to get summer practices and hell week,” Said Bautista after the game. “We did what we could with the four weeks that we got, came together as a team, and showed out.”
