Going Gonzo: 4/28/2021

By Alex Gonzalez

I am now in the final stages of creating a sports podcast that covers all sports at the high school, college, and professional levels. It will be an in-depth look at what is going on throughout the world of sports with my thoughts and opinions. With that said, if there is anyone who would want to take part in helping produce this podcast, let’s talk about it via Instagram @alex_gonzalez360 or Twitter @MrGoingGonzo.

The first round of the NFL draft starts this Thursday, and with the first pick of the 2021 NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select Trevor Lawrence, right? The Clemson quarterback is the clear-cut No. 1 pick, and if he were allowed to come out of college last year, he would have been the top pick in last year’s draft as well. He is that good.

The team that has the most potential to add to their team is the Philadelphia Eagles. The club has the most picks this year with 11. There is a possibility they could trade most of them, but for new Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, he could use all the help he can get.

That is something the Seattle Seahawks could use to give Russell Wilson. If the team wants him to cook, get him some help. However, with three picks in this year’s draft, the least among the league, they will have to pick wisely.

As for the rest of the draft, that remains to be seen. The New York Jets hold the second pick and then follow the San Fransisco 49ers at No. 3.

Rumors around the league and what the experts predict is that Zach Wilson, quarterback of BYU, will go No. 2 overall, followed by Justin Fields from Ohio State will be the 49ers pick. There is just one thing that I do not buy.

I do not see the top three picks in the draft all being quarterbacks. Barring any trades and the teams keep their selections, I see a shake-up after Lawrence gets picked. But who? Well, there is Kyle Pitts, Tight end from Florida, and Penei Sewell, offensive linemen from Oregon. There is also Heisman winner Devonta Smith, who is said to be the best receiver in this year’s class.

I predict that one of those three prospects will be chosen by either the Jets or 49ers. Then again, I want to see USC’s Amon-Ra St. Brown get selected, just not too late in the draft.

I’ll, of course, be glued to my screen as the picks come down in hopes the Indianapolis Colts add to their depth to their offensive line and defensive secondary.

The draft excites me for two reasons. One, I can start gathering intel for my fantasy team, and the fact that football will consume my life again will give me something to do on Sundays.

That’s where I’m going.
