Sports, and the athletes who participate in them, are reflective of their societies and their historical times. And, in this country, athletes have the same right to free speech as everyone else.
I think it’s useful to point out that some team owners, such as Jerry Jones (Dallas Cowboys) and Robert Kraft (New England Patriots), are known for their outspoken conservative views. Tom Brady and Curt Schilling have been among the more conservative athletes we’ve seen in recent years.
But, athletes are mainly young people, and younger people in general tend to be at least somewhat more liberal politically. In addition, many African American and Latino athletes come from communities where serious issues concerning education, health care, unemployment, poverty, crime, and policing have lingered for decades.
And now, in many states, we can add the issue of voting rights, which many of us thought had been justly settled more than half a century ago.
We are living in difficult times and it’s going to take a while to work our way through them. All of us, including athletes, need to participate in finding solutions. We are all part of this country and of our respective communities, and we must give them our best effort.

So I guess you hated Ali, Kareem opined frequently, many Olympic athletes and US Olympic teams, just shut up and dribble right? Hmm? Is it because alot of socially conscious athletes are people of color that makes you angry? It must be nice to live in a bubble that allows one to ignore the injustice and worsening racism the US. Everyone should call out injustice when they see it. It’s called being a human. I think the dreadful days are the days when injustice is deemed normal and ignored.

The Showtime Lakers had everything you could ask for in a sports team: star players, fast-break thrills, and breakthrough championship wins. Those teams showed us greatness and achievement, which transmitted nicely to Lakers fans, making them happier and more ambitious. Today’s NBA teams, the Lakers not excepted, seem intent on TELLING us that we’re not good enough to enjoy life, because we lack the finer insights on social justice that are apparently exclusive to pro basketball stars. I can’t recall ever hearing what Kareem or Magic or Kobe thought about the issues of the day…they just played ball, and we all loved the non-partisan result. Those were the good days; we’re living in the dreadful ones.
