Covina — The Northview Vikings bounced back Friday with a 34-14 win over crosstown rival South Hills thanks to Jaydon Guevara’s two rushing touchdowns and 169 yards rushing at Covina District Field.

“It’s said over and over, but it’s really a team win,” said Guevara. “The stuff I did out there wasn’t me at all. It was the team. We’re short-handed on guys, and we just came out and performed.”

Ball control looked to be the Vikings’ main game plan against the Huskies as they opened the game with a 21-play drive that consumed over nine minutes of the opening quarter. With the two-quarterback system of Jose Espinoza and James Arellanes, Northview marched down the field from their 25-yard line and had Espinoza complete the drive with his two-yard rushing touchdown.

The trend continued on their following possession, but this time it was because of Guevara, who the carried the workload for the Vikings as they chewed up more clock and ended their drive with Arellanes connecting with Aaron Silva to take a 14-0 lead with 8:42 left in the second quarter.

Northview tried to go for the knockout when they forced the Huskies on a quick three and out, but their drive was interrupted by Miguel Garcia, who recovered Arellanes’ fumbled snap. On the very next play, Joseph Rivera faked the handoff to Jayson Porter and found Jasaun Munford alone in the end zone.

The Vikings didn’t take long to respond, mainly because Guevara’s 68-yard score gave his team a 21-6 lead before the halftime whistle.

Following intermission, South Hills was able to construct a drive that resulted in a touchdown. Jayden Montenegro was responsible for getting his team down the field after making back-to-back catches that put the Huskies into scoring territory. Rivera then was able to hook up with Daylon Ware in the back of the end zone.

However, the score would be the Huskies’ last of the night as Northview’s Arellanes and Guevara added touchdowns to seal the win for the Vikings.

Northview will try to make it consecutive wins next Friday when they play Covina. South Hills will try to end their three-game losing streak next week when they travel to Monrovia.
