Game Night: Week 7

Corey Cheung and La Canada have a big game against Monrovia Friday night. (Photo by Duane Barker).

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Thursday October 6

Arroyo (3-3) at El Monte (2-4)

Both teams are coming off of MVL victories and both could use another one in the second week of league play to establish a spot in first place. El Monte won but gave up a lot of points to a Gabrielino team that has been struggling. Arroyo rolled over Mt. View, which the Knights should have done, but they did what they were supposed to do. Oh and by the way, the Knights defense has pitched three straight shutouts. Arroyo wins going away.

South El Monte (2-4) at Gabrielino (1-3)

South El Monte lost a close one to Rosemead. The Eagles will be determined to not let that happen again. A loss could completely wreck their season. Gabrielino needs a win as well but ultimately won’t be able to hold off South. South El Monte evens its MVL record at 1-1.

Friday October 7

Schurr (3-3) at Bell Gardens (3-3)

Both teams had big wins last week to kick off the Almont. Schurr hung 56 on a previously unbeaten San Gabriel squad while Bell Gardens absolutely thumped Alhambra. The Lancers have been Jekyll and Hyde. The week before they shut out the Moors they were blanked themselves by Covina 41-0. The trendy pick would be Bell Gardens. I never liked trendy. Schurr gets the W.

San Gabriel (4-1) at Montebello (4-2)

Montebello thumped Keppel last week but doesn’t everybody? San Gabriel can score but the Matadors defense needs to step up after getting hit by a 56 shot last week. I think it will. Montebello has given up a lot of points as well in previous losses. San Gabriel gets the rebound win,

La Canada (4-2) at Monrovia (4-2)

Yes we know La Canada is on the rise. Yes we know the Spartans have had their moments this year and have had a couple of impressive victories. But they haven’t played Monrovia. The Wildcats needed everything they had last week to beat South Pasadena and were humbled by Ayala and San Dimas in consecutive weeks. But they are still Monrovia and the King of the Rio Hondo until someone proves otherwise. Monrovia owns the Rio.

Monrovia 38 La Canada 24

La Mirada (3-3) at Mayfair (3-3) (Bellflower)

Mayfair had a big test last week against Warren but took one on the chops 54-7. This one is another tough task. That’s the problem with playing in the Gateway League, every week is a battle. La Mirada dropped 43 on Dominguez last week and may be ready to bust out again this week. A Mayfair win would be huge for the Monsoons, but it might be too much to ask.

La Mirada 31 Mayfair 17

Covina (3-3) at Claremont (3-2)

Covina has won three straight after a rough start. Claremont is 3-2 in a very competitive schedule. The Wolfpack also stayed with a talented Bonita team before falling by just three, 31-28. Both teams played South Hills. Claremont beat the Huskies last week 28-13 while Covina fell to South Hills back in August 16-14. Claremont emerges with the win in a close call.

Claremont 21 Covina 17

Chino Hills (4-3) at Damien (2-5)

Damien bounced back from the Bishop Amat disaster with a win over Upland last week in the Baseline League opener. Chino Hills fell to Etiwanda in overtime and needs a win this week to stay in the thick of the Baseline. Damien is 2-5 overall but are now 1-0 in league and will use last week’s win to get going. Chino Hills will give the Spartans a battle but Damien finds a way to win in the end.

Furthermore these squads had -30 power ratings ; he has taken crummy teams and made them better to the point they could roll the bottom dwellers of MVL . When Workman played RHP they got decimated .

No quality wins at Bassett last year , —-they lost to Ganesha—good performance in playoff loss probably most impressive

He’s probably good coach , but as SGV outsider, I don’t get the guru reputation

Why does everyone think Spathias is this great coach? Every team he’s taken over already was good.
When he took over the Workman Program he had a stud at QB and s couple of very good receivers
When he took over the Bassett program, he took over a program that was already headed in the right direction before he came in and sent it crashing down again. El Monte will be his true first rebuild. Let’s see how it goes. Because he left Bassett and Workman in worse shape than when he came in

    Arroyo vs EM
Was really looking fire to this game in the off season. Now I think Arroyo who had a tough non league schedule is primed to run the the MVL. Arroyo is too for the young lions 42-14

    Rosemead Vs MV
Rosemead is coming two big wins in back to back weeks while MV had high hopes that got smashed real quick. I’m gonna go with Rosemead to stay hot and make it 3 in a row
    32-14

    SEM vs Gabrielino
Eagles Vs Eagles showdown. SEM comes off a big Loss to Rosemead while gab kept it close with EM. I’m going with the upset here Gab takes it 21-14. SEM fans will over run the blog.

I really thought El Monte would be a lot better then they are. With Spathais and staff I thought kids would join the program. Hopefully they give Arroyo some competition
