"...And God Bless Mrs. Sumler."

T-Minus-31 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”

Good Evening!

Sunday night, during dinner, it was brought up what a Temple City victory over Arroyo would mean in Week One… I said the people at The Crest would announce drinks on the house…and the entire Arroyo coaching staff would go on suicide watch…

“I don’t know dude, maybe they could pull something?” A Mid staffer said to me.

Pull what?

I’ve come to a minor conclusion, maybe if I’m still around next year I’ll make it a major conclusion, but there is infinitely more to talk about regarding prep football from January to July 31st than the first two weeks of August. Most of the discussion threads/lines have been played out and all that’s left is the action on the field.

This doesn’t mean I’m going to stop posting (Got a whole laundry load of ‘lists’ to get me through), but we do have to guard ourselves from over thinking things…Especially lines like; “Maybe they could pull something…”

Back in 2006 when Arroyo played La Habra in the first round, I had a feeling. It was tough to describe, but I thought; “Maybe they could pull something…” So I took that game…as the Cheese I could have taken any game I wanted that night. Bad News Barker and Peterson asked if I was sure… I said; “I think they’re going to pull something…”

And I wanted to be there…Even wore my Carolina Blue/Arroyo sweater vest…and saw a team, represented by a guy in a skirt, take the Knights apart 55-0, November 17, 2006.

I’ve been pretty much done with thinking “maybe they can pull something” in regards to an underdog ever since…Or at least when I do, I keep it too myself.

There is part of me wanting to dance with Gladstone as the second place team in the Montview…I like Joe Herrera, but I know folks at G-Stone are concerned how their offensive line is going to hold up.

A question came up this weekend about former Rosemed Panther Tra Sumler…Last I heard (May) he was well ahead of schedule on recovering from a broken ankle while playing safety at Fullerton last fall…Was also told by coaches on staff that he was the real deal and should have a great season.

The Mid still “suggests” to the Rosemead coaching staff that every team prayer should close with; “…And God Bless Mrs. Sumler.”

After watching the Hall of Fame game last night, I am so thrilled to see Alex Barron playing for the Dallas Cowboys…I wish him a career span of a thousand years, as long as he never again puts on a Rams uniform.

Maybe its time to re-evaluate some goals in life… It is probably about time I gave up on that dream of flying the space shuttle…as well as the hope of playing quarterback for San Gabriel…Time to admit I’m really not a scheme fit for them.

From James Escarcega (On the ongoing discussion about prep quarterbacks):

“I noticed that you had a note about QB’s and if they need a ‘big” arm to win a Southeast Division championship.

In a short word, I say yes.  but, it is only part of the package.  If I had to list the attributes for a successful quarterback – here what I would be looking for….

1)  The ability to manage a game. How many times do you hear a HC say that his QB may not have the strongest arm, but he can manage a great game. That is what separated Kevin Mort from the rest of the QB in the SGV during his senior year in 2005.  Look back at the quotes from the game and you’ll see what Bogan’s comments were from the game.

2)  Leadership…. enough said.

3)  The ability to run. If you have a QB that is a running threat – i.e. Gus Viramontes last season for Diamond Ranch – it’s an extra threat that a Defensive Coordinator has to account for when formulating the game plan for the game. It causes them to have grey hairs.

4)  Arm Strength. The positives for having a big arm are huge. As an offensive coordinator, you can dial up speed out routes from one hash mark to the other and have no worries that the ball will get there.  Jacob Shirley was a perfect example last year.  About 25% of his completions were throwing speed outs to Ify Umodu from one hash mark to the other.  Now, the other part of the equation is that you have to have a WR that can run those routes with a little wiggle.  Having a QB that can sling it can really open up a offensive playbook for a offensive coordinator.

One last point Joe. In dealing with college football asst. coaches who are evaluating QB’s their first question is always, ‘How accurate is arm and how far can he throw it?’”

Last Add Sunday Night Dinner: “I just don’t know if I’m buying all the hype on Rowland beyond Michael Ball,” said one Mid staffer.

Okay.

Did go out to Temple City to check up on a comment dropped in yesterday’s Fanview Lite regarding former Gabrielino player Jaime Dea. The running back enrolled at Temple City last semester and is running with the squad. I only saw him for about an hour, but he hits the hole fast…Looks like he has a little bit of Tsai in him.

“Football Rush Week” is coming…August 23-27.

Stay thirsty my friends…
