Arroyo: Running Forward

T-Minus-23 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”

Good Afternoon!

Smudge Pot #2: November 9, 1973 at Bonita

The build up to this game included LaVerne residents building make shift tombstones and placing them in their front yards: “Here Lies San Dimas” Local newspapers carried photos of moms cheerfully adding them to their gardens.

The burials, however, were premature.

In the second quarter San Dimas quarterback Dave Maloof went 21-yards to split end John Brahs for a 6-0 lead (PAT was missed).

Bonita took the lead in the third when quarterback Bruce McNaught scored on a 48-yard run and Harold Drake added the point after to make it 7-6. But a Bearcat turnover late in the fourth led to the Saint winning touchdown.

Tracy Cowger scored on a 21-yard run to secure the 13-7 victory for San Dimas and a 2-0 lead in the young series.

Lebron James is doubting that Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert ever truly cared about him…Awe…that breaks my heart…Because I know Greg Papas, Tom Moreno, Steve Scarpa, Andy Goober, Rose Campa, and Sandy Fennell—my former bosses at Albertsons, Shilo, CVS, and Standard Brands—all cancelled Christmas because they were so broken up over my departure from their lives.

For all his obvious maturity in some matters, James should really be measured for a skirt this off season. The question about his former boss isn’t whether he liked Lebron or hated Lebron…All anyone needs to know is that he PAID Lebron.

This is why I love The Mid…We never miss coupon-day…I mean payday, even though Citizen Keenan can be a tyrant.

So at the end of the Arroyo practice yesterday, His Arroyo Baldness gives his team the appropriate scolding/slash exhortation…Which included a gem about people in a *deleted expletive* economy spending money to come see them play…Very much in midseason form… Players and coaches scatter, we talk for ten minutes, Singiser admires my Flip Camera, accuses me of going high tech, and then we saw quarterback Steven Rivera ordering a lineman to do bear crawls.

“What’s he doing?” I asked as we watched from across the field.

Singiser calls Rivera over; “What did he do?”

“He was messing around in the locker room,” Rivera said, then he added the clincher. “And he got a ball wet.”

“Alright,” said Singiser.

“And he’s only a junior coach,” I said about Rivera.

“By next year he’s going to be demanding a coach’s locker and a parking space. *Deleted Expletive*, but he’s mine.”

I don’t know what happened with the weather. Seemed to flirt with hot for a while, and then it all went Newport Beach on us.

The Mid Minute with San Dimas guys Jordan Taylor and Dillon Corona was fun…they laughed…I don’t know if I got any insight beyond the fact that they are having a good time.

San Dimas HC Bill Zernickow refused to be interviewed on camera…He said something about everytime he clicked on Mid Valley Sports he saw stuff only about Arroyo.

Last Add Zernickow: He did smile when I told him I’d be at the Smudge Pot game.

Every time I see Mark Brunell take the field, like last night for the Jets, I don’t feel so old… For the record I am a Brad Smith fan…Yeah, go Jets…

Last Add Corona: He along with several other Saints players looked seriously bulked up from where they were a year ago.

Nothing personal against Burbank, Burroughs, or Maranatha…but school starting on August 16th is just wrong.

Because of all the time and calendar changes…CIF has issued a statement that officially changes “Hell Week” to “Heck Week”.

“Football Rush Week” is coming…August 23-27.

Stay thirsty my friends…
