Spartans Stand Alone Atop the Almont

(Bell Gardens) On the final night of the regular season with the Almont League title on the line, the Schurr Spartans and the Bell Gardens Lancers faced off Friday night in a winner take all battle. Joseph Alvarado and Elias Navarro each scored twice on the ground to lead the Spartans to a resounding 49-7 win at Bell Gardens HIgh School.

Alvarado also tossed three touchdown passes for good measure to Caesar Aguila and Erik Henderson and Tyler Higashi.

Schurr won the toss and elected to defer their choice to the second half.

On their first drive from scrimmage, the Lancers went on a 12-play drive that stalled at the Spartan 15. Luis Llamas trotted onto the field to attempt a 23-yard field goal. The attempt came up short and Schurr took over at its own 20.

11 plays later Alvarado connected with Aguila for the first score on the night. Robert Olivares added the extra point for the 7-0 lead.

Aguila set up Schurr for the second score when he picked off Bell Gardens’ quarterback Michael Mendoza at the Lancer 37.

Schurr needed five plays to cover the 37-yards with Alvarado covering 21 of those yards to paydirt.

Midway through the second Schurr would push its lead to 21-0 on Alvarado’s nine-yard strike to Henderson.

Coming out of the break the Spartans needed only two plays to get on the board again when Alvarado hit Higashi over the middle. Higashi outraced the Lancer defenders to the endzone for the 28-0 lead.

The four-score advantage was short lived as Devin Duarte field the ensuing kickoff at his own five, weaved his way through the Spartan defenders and cooked down the sideline for 95-yards and the touchdown.

The Schurr defense kept the Lancer offense in check.

It was as close as the Lancers got on the night as Navarro scored back-to-back touchdowns from 1-yard and 46-yards away.

Alvarado put the finishing touch on the game with a one-yard plunge. The score was set up by a bad snap when Bell Gardens was getting ready to punt the ball away.

With the win Schurr improved to 9-1 on the season while Bell Gardens dropped to 7-2.

Both teams will now await Sunday’s CIF Playoff selections to see where they will be to start the post season.

What’s funny us I’m a Schurr Alumni and my nephew went and played there 4 years ago and he came home and told me that their coach Cota went to UCLA and played I was laughing my a** off I checked but I knew it wasn’t true. We teach our kids not to lie I guess we need to teach some coaches too.

Schurr is the regular season Champions again. Come first round, then bye bye… So much for all those transfers that don’t help you when needed the most. Btw, Coach Danny Cota played LB at UCLA. Look at his resume …

That made no difference in CPR . Game margins are capped at 30.
Maybe some kind of karma from your point of view , but no substance regarding CPR

If Schurr takes a knee with 1 minute left in the game and leading by 35 points instead of scoring with their starters in to prove some sort of point they probably are the #1 seed in D7 but that’s Ramos and how much he hates BG
