San Dimas' Gabe Jimenez raises the Smudge Pot after last year's victory.

T-Minus-7 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”

Good Afternoon!

Oh, I’ve always been a Matt Barkley fan…

…I’ll let you know after next weekend how I feel about fantasy football.

Are those just ranch hands they bring in at Tesoro? Dudes are big and really Valley Christian was outmanned from the get-go last night.

54-0 is bad, truly, but maybe in five weeks after some seasoning, after nerves have subsided, if the Crusaders and Titans played again it wouldn’t be this bad.

…Then again did I mention Tesoro was big? I mean they are so big they could move to Palm Springs and sell shade!

That You Sir May I Have Another?

Did you catch the Trib-Star-Whittier Prep Extra? What a butt-kicking…and I’m not just saying it here…I conveyed as much to Robledo. Him and his guys did a great job with the football preview, it’s the best thing area dailys have produced in a long time.

Last Add Prep Extra: I didn’t read every word, but I saw enough of it to be reaffirmed in my belief that print is not dead. If the suits, in all publications, will invest and allow quality to be produced stuff like the Prep Extra (or is it Xtra? Sorry) will always have a place.

I met MaxPreps’ Stan Granch last night…and it all went well until he told me he was a Giants fan. Then while discussing baseball he passed on he was two up on me in collecting baseball’s at Major League games. No foul balls or homeruns have come near me since going to my first game in 1975, while Granch has two. This includes a homerun ball by Joel Youngblood.

But I do like the new look of MaxPreps.

I got it over the phone, I saw it posted on the site, had it on my Facebook, yes I know that Bonita beat San Dimas at the Frosh and JV levels this week…but until you get back the Smudge Pot Bearcat fans those wins are on par with catching a homerun ball from Joel Youngblood…Nice, but hardly transcendent.

Have to admit I do miss seeing SD’s Nico Barbone run.

You gotta love what Bishop Amat is doing with the military decals on their helmets this season, honoring our fallen soldiers who were alumni of the school…Thumbs Up!

Last Add Robledo: I was looking to add him as a kicker in my fantasy draft on Monday night…Didn’t get him though.

Through 1975 San Gabriel had been living life as part of the original Mission Valley League, which included Schurr, Monrovia, Keppel. In 1976 the Matadors moved to the Pacific League and on October 30th they met Muir and got blasted 28-10.

In 1977 the Mustangs whacked them again 27-15. In 1978 they beat them 18-0. In 1979 Muir won 28-7. In 1980 they won 58-7, and in 1981, the last meeting between the schools, the Mustangs won 39-0.

Last Add SG-Muir: The first meeting between the schools was in week seven of the 1971 season, and yes the Mustangs won 22-14.

Ganesha’s 31 points last night were the most scored by a Giants team since dropping 42 on Garey in a 42-25 victory in 2002. The season opening victory over Montclair was the school’s first victory in an opener since knocking off Sierra Vista 27-14 in 2003.

Last Add Ganesha: The 31 point total against Montclair is also one more point than the Giants squad posted for the entire 2004 season when they registered a mere 30. Ganesha was shutout six consecutive times to start that year.

And we close (look at the bottom) with a history of the Smudge Pot game…I like San Dimas in this one.

Stay thirsty my friends…
