Rivera Takes Care of Business; Arroyo Wins

By Big George Hernandez

(El Monte)- Arroyo quarterback Steven Rivera did his job and then some in the Knights 35-14 win over Ontario Friday night at B.L. Bergstrom Stadium.

The game started off slow for both teams with Arroyo going three and out on its first possession. On the second play for Ontario, Knight’s defensive end Sam Torres broke threw the line and tackled Charlie Cooper in the end zone for a safety.

Arroyo again had to punt the ball, and on the Jaguars first play of their second possession Knight linebacker Anthony Flores found his way in the backfield and sacked Ontario quarterback Hector Ochoa for another safety.

Later, after a potential touchdown pass was barely caught out of bounds, the Knights had to go for a field goal and made it a 7-0 game.

There wasn’t any offense for either team until a Jaguars capped a long drive with a Cooper 3-yard touchdown run, to make the score 7-6 going into halftime.

Arroyo came out blazing the second half driving the ball down field and Mikey Vazquez finished it off with a 3-yard score. After a Alexis Aceves interception Rivera found Hunter Duran wide open for a 38-yard touchdown pass to open the game up 21-6.

At the start of the fourth quarter Rivera did his part on defense picking a Ochoa pass and taking it 65-yards down field to the 20-yard line. He finished it up by finding Miller for another touchdown pass making it 28-6.

Ontario still had a little left in the tank when Joseph Davis ran the kick off back 90-yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit in half 28-14 after Ochoa found Jose Uribe for the two point conversion.

The Knights answered the Jaguars when Vazquez found the end zone again from 22-yards out, to make it 35-14.

Rivera finished the game 13 of 20 for 276-yards and two touchdowns and his pick on defense. Vazquez had 82-yards on 17 attempts and two scores. Christian Salcedo had 75 total yards for the Jags, Ochoa finished with 133 combined yards on the ground and air. Darnell Shaw and John Saenz each had a sack.

Arroyo will be in the Mid Valley Classic next week against Temple City. Ontario will be home next week against Rubidoux.
