(El Monte) – Mt. View has hired former Damien and Bishop Amat head coach Mark Paredes as their new head football coach Athletic Director Angel Lopez confirmed Friday.
Paredes was the head coach at Damien from 2013-2018 compiling an overall record of 30-34. He has been an assistant coach under Steve Hagerty at Bishop Amat for the last four years.
Paredes was also the head coach at Bishop Amat in the nineties where he guided the Lancers to a CIF title in 1992.
Paredes moved on to JW North where he won two more CIF championships in 1995 and 2001.
He stepped down as the head coach at Damien after the 2018 campaign deciding at the time that it was time to “ride off into the sunset” and possibly retire. The Spartans went 4-7 overall in ’18 and lost to Citrus Hill in the first round of the CIF Division 3 playoffs.
But he decided to return to the place where he had so much success, Bishop Amat, in 2021 as an assistant before resigning after the season when Hagerty stepped down.
Paredes takes over for Paul Rodriguez who resigned in October of last year after leading the Vikings since 2021.
Now a new era begins and a new view for Paredes and the Vikings.

El Monte Union Welcomes Legendary Football Coach to Mountain View High
School
EL MONTE – Mountain View High School (MVHS) has appointed CIF Hall of Fame Football Coach Mark Paredes as its new head football coach. Paredes, inducted into the CIF Southern Section’s Hall of Fame in 2021, is renowned for his remarkable career, which includes leading Bishop Amat High School to the Division 1 title in 1992 and guiding JW North High School to section championships in 1995 and 2001.
“Mountain View is deeply honored to have such a legendary leader guide our student-athletes. Coach Paredes is a man of great character, and we could not ask for a better role model for our boys to learn from,” MVHS principal
Jose Relson Bañas said. “We are humbled by his commitment to serve our community and cannot wait to see how he will inspire greatness in the hearts and minds of our Viking family.”
NWO agree with you , and I will add my suggestion about his current attitude accepting this position. Ok. Paredes already has a ‘proven scientific proof using his ability to win , and ability to earn 3 CIF Championships at two different levels of competition, and head coach and assistant coach also at pretty good levels of football. I would love having one cif championship, nonetheless three. I believe Paredes (yes he is looking forward to this challenge) just may want to see if he can earn another championship at any level; or even knowing what a ‘great job’ it will be if MV can move up in the standings enough to earn a CIF berth under his direction. And , of coarse, he can now feel very good, and expect a big, positive change for MV;s program knowing he has very good ability to direct MV Football to move toward their potential. Even though he usually coaches higher level athletes
Good for him. I’m sure he knows what MV football has been lately, and he’s not afraid of a new challenge. Good luck coach.
word has got out the ALL-LEAGUE guard from El Monte High School is transferring to Ledesma to turn their program around
605 & 10 And very very good scientific successful conclusion based on winning percentage and CIF championships. And , I suggest, very responsible knowledge of O and D and Special Teams strategies . I hope the athletes will rise to the occasion and respect the ‘discipline and hard work’ Paredes will try to motivate. The players must ‘buy into’ the mental toughness Paredes will be trying to instill within MV football’s new program and self belief

LP HOMIE? you are suggesting he cannot mentor Minor if he is not head coaching at the same time? Or did I misinterpret your comment? If this is what you mean, Paredes will have very much lesser time to mentor
It’s a cover job people, he’ll be mentoring Kory Minor at Amat, so he needs to be with in the area.
Do you all know what the phrase: “TIME TO WASTE” means?
FBFan I agree with you that if they can win as many as lose it is a job very well done/! But MV has been far from ‘mediocrity’, but rather been close to terrible statistic wise right. I hope in two seasons they make the playoffs
This is fabulous news for our community and school. Great job by everyone involved in getting this done. My son can’t wait to play for you Coach Parades. It’s so refreshing to have an established responsible adult leading our young men.
Very soon….
His Grandchildren will not transfer to Mt. View! I see him lasting One year. Then he will for sure retire.
The last good team MtView had was in 97. Memo Jasso at QB, Mario Ortiz at WR, Nick Cordova at TE, Tony Figueroa on Defense & Christian Salazar at RB was a stud. Which all were Kranz middle school products. If all Kranz kids went to the same high school, they would run the table in league.
Wow! Looks like MV got a steal! He must know what MV football is and must be interested in a project.
Best of luck to you coach!
With Pete Carroll (age 73) taking over in Vegas, we now have Parades (age 72) sprinting back onto the field in El Monte. If this trend continues, expect teams to start scouting gravesites of past coaching greats with stethoscopes, listening for heartbeats in the soil, shovels ready to revive careers.
Congratulations coach Paredes and welcome to Mountain View High School. Personally, I think this is a big step in the right direction. The Mountain climb is steep but not impossible. It’s time for the El Monte and South El Monte community help embrace and support this coach. This is what you call a historic hire, great job to the administration. The MVL wins overall and perfect timing I must say. Brand new Stadium, Brand new coach, time for the start to a brand new culture.
First this is a GREAT hire.
But remember, Mt. View is one of those programs where you say “you can bring in Nick Saban and they’d still lose.” So will improvements happen for a program mired in mediocrity? Yes. Will they be so drastic that they win league or become relevant in the SGV? Probably not. If he can get them to go 5-5 or 6-4 and into the playoffs; that would be a huge win its own right.
Yeah the guys an idiot.
The team that spat took over was two years removed from an undefeated season that won a title one year under Romero made the playoffs. This team hasn’t made the playoffs since 1997 they had a 6-4 season in 2023 but one W was a FF. Wilson and Ambruso had them going in the right direction for a little a decade ago.
Arroyo hired a new coach?!?!
From T. Peterson: No. Not yet.
? Are you suggesting that MVL teams he will compete with have lots of talent? I do not think they do, but i am not claiming to be correct. Spathias took over an El Monte program very similar to MV’s condition. Spathias and staff pretty much immediately turned terrible into very respectful, especially in league.
A very , very possible great ‘new era’ for MV. I am glad MV hired this super qualified winner of three cif championships, and I do not care about his experience has pretty much been with plenty of very good athletes. Nor will I ever believe that a very qualified winner may not have the ability to motivate , love, etc and turn a losing program into a successful program. His very good, or better, experience in winning and coaching competitive teams in much better divisions ( I suggest/ believe with no doubt) gives him the rating as the most experienced head coach in this league without doubt. Paredes will be challenging MVL teams and head coaches with much less experience in winning and creating players to move toward their potential as athletes. This is one of the most important things good coaches do! Arroyo, Rosemead, Gabrielino (if still in the league) and the other teams in the MVL I only suggest , have a head coach like Paredes . I suggest he might have forgot more football than some of the other league’s head coaches know? Proud of Mountain view high school !
?? Are you suggesting this great and very very fortunate hire for MV will not result with successful improvement of a annual losing terribly program? I strongly suggest that Paredes is football intelligent enough to know exactly what he is getting into with this losing program and losing games by 40 or more points consistently. NO NO I do not claim to know more than anybody, but I do know , and have observed, that very good head coaches (especially big time winners) can turn a terrible program into a respectful one in a two or three year time. Well even if it does not work for the best, at least MVHS tried hard and made a great effort to get a very good coach
Coaches used to having cream of the crop players are often spoiled. Unless he plans to recruit like crazy he will find coaching up players that just show up is not as easy. They are often inexperienced and undisciplined. Lotsa luck. He is getting an early jump.
@PM,
You’re kidding right? The man won a cif championship at Bishop Freakin Amat!!!!
And then won more CIF Championships at JW North. I’m sure your coaching resume is more impressive.
From T. Peterson: Yeah he’s clueless and he’s done.
Word around town is Arroyo has hired a new coach as well. Unknown who exactly. Two MVL teams with new HC should make for some fun football
This is pretty unbelievable but pretty awesome at the same time. Good for Mointain View. Sometimes football guys just can’t get that football out of them.
Wait until you see who Schurr hires!
