Gonzales Steps Down at Keppel

Robert Gonzales has stepped down as the head football coach at Keppel.

By Tim Peterson

(Alhambra) – Robert Gonzales has stepped down as the head football coach at Keppel after four years he announced on Twitter (X) Monday night.

The Aztecs finished 0-10 last season.

“After careful consideration I am resigning as head coach at Mark Keppel to focus on my family. Like my mentor Mr. Villasenor once said ‘what a great opportunity but wrong time in my life.’ I wish Mark Keppel the best and look forward to seeing their success,” Gonzales posted on X.

Keppel will begin the search for a new head coach immediately.

Could this finally be the end of Aztecs football? I played high school football in the mid 80’s and they were bad then. I give them props for still trying, but who’s going to take that job?

@FBF …. I totally agree with your sentiment , but unfortunately ( at least in our eyes ) it’s a different era in athletics with a wide gamut of high school sports and girls taking more prominence . Many schools are niche schools, in which their particular program is dominant – big fish in a small pond . This becomes part of established culture of school .

Football becoming good would mean big shifts in this established culture . People there could say “oh yeah we want football to be good “ but when football starts winning they feel threatened . Niche sports get choice of athletes on campus and there are limited numbers . When the basketball / volleyball players start playing football coaches get triggered …. “they could get hurt “ … and start scheduling mandatory off season practices ….Its just human nature for jealousy and possessiveness to arise in these school settings where people have been there for years . People have egos .
Thus the status quo , no matter how embarrassing, endures .

I worked under Coach Gonzalez at Keppel for a couple of month and he’s a good coach, but there is zero athletic support from admin. Football comes last for them.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Everyone, excluding football coaches and football players, involved in the athletic program at Keppel should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. They are at the very least somewhat competitive in most sports and even dominant in a couple. The Almont League cannot touch them in basketball and volleyball.

There are athletes on that campus but the administration needs to understand that no no one cared about Indiana until their football team started winning. The football program is what matters and there is absolutely no reason as to why the Kepple team shouldn’t be competitive with the athletes they have on campus. Kudos to those kids who go out there and take a beating week in and week out and never quit!

    Baseball (last season) 8-17
    Basketball 13-8 (4-0 in league)
    Soccer 6-8
    Volleyball 27-6 (10-0 in league)

While RHP licks its wounds over that state title loss, perhaps letting that setback cloud the greatness of its other wins, Keppel is in the astounding position of needing just one win—over anybody–to cause a huge stir on the Alhambra campus and in the minds of Aztec fans. What a amazing contrast in perspectives. I truly hope the next guy can get that W.

“ I look forward to seeing their success “ ?????

Amazing . 0-40. That will damage the spirit of even the most willful man . At least he has head coaching experience, and he’ll land a job somewhere…
