9. On this day in 1997 the St. Louis Cardinals acquired slugger Mark McGwire from the Oakland A’s for relief pitcher T.J. Matthews and two minor league pitchers. McGwire was hitting .340 with 34 home runs and 81 RBI for Oakland at the time.
