Burroughs Beats Arcadia; Unbeaten in Pacific

(Arcadia) – Devin Whittekiend threw six innings and allowed just three runs and the offense did the rest as Burroughs beat Arcadia 6-3 Tuesday at Giambrone Field.

Tied at three after five innings Burroughs scored two in the sixth and added one more in the seventh to put it away. Whittekiend walked a batter but threw a scoreless sixth and Jake Rauenswinder came on to close it out in the seventh.

In the sixth Rauenswinder walked and Thomas Martin was hit by a pitch. Andrew Cooper then relieved Arcadia starter Peter Cuoco. After Slater Mersola hit into a fielder’s choice Kayson Montgomery singled to left to drive in Martin. Zack Guevara beat out an infield hit and a fly ball by Elliot Ross plated another run to put the Bears up 5-3.

Burrough added one more in the seventh when Raueswinder walked and worked his way around to score on a wild pitch.

Arcadia took the lead in the first inning as Jordan Vogel doubled, worked his way to third and scored on a fly ball by Damian Catano.

The Bears got even in the second when Jack Smith walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Martin.

Burroughs took a 3-1 lead in the fourth when Whittekiend doubled and scored on a base hit by Smith. Smith then scored on an infield hit by Martin.

The Apaches answered with a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth to get even. Tyler Brereton doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Aiden Soto in the fourth. In the fifth Vogel singled, advanced on a balk and scored on a single by Matt Manzo.

The Bears then pulled away and held on for the victory over the next two innings.

Cooper went the last two innings for Arcadia after picking up for Cuoco. For Burroughs Whittekiend allowed six hits and three runs in six innings to get the win before handing the ball off to Rauenswinder.

With the victory Burroughs improved to 16-3 overall but more importantly 9-0 and in first place in the Pacific League. Arcadia fell to 13-8 and 8-1 in league.
