(Hacienda Heights) – I sat down with Los Altos softball outstanding freshman Veida Aikey who has helped the Conquerors capture another league title this week. Aikey, who is a utility player, is currently batting .400 with a homerun, 14 RBIs and a .528 on base percentage.
Q: What’s up kid, how’s it going?
A: Good, how are you?
Q: How does it feel to be a huge part of a real good Los Altos softball team as a freshman?
A: It feels really good, and I’m really excited for what’s to come in the future.
Q: How long have you been playing softball and where did you play before being a Conqueror?
A: I’ve been playing softball for about 9 years. I started playing rec at Whittier girls softball. I have also been playing travel softball for the last 5 years, most recently for Explosion Aikey 16u.
Q: Who do you model your game after?
A: Kaitlyn Terry a pitcher and utility player for Texas Tech.
Q: How would your teammates and coaches describe you?
A: I think my high school teamates and coaches would describe me as quiet, and always putting in my best effort.
Q: What is your goal for the team and you personally for the remainder of the season?
A: The goal is to hopefully make a deep run in playoffs, and for me to be able to help my team accomplish that in any way I can, whether I’m on the field or not.
Q: What is the biggest lesson you have learned from softball so far?
A: The biggest lesson I’ve learned from softball so far is softball is a very big mental game, and staying positive is very important.
Q: How do you handle the pressure of playing in high stakes games?
A: I handle the pressure of playing in high stakes games by reminding myself that I have been there before and knowing my teammates have my back and I have theirs.
Q: Why Los Altos over the other schools in your area?
A: My childhood best friends were going there and being with them is important to me.
Q: You’re only a freshman but what are your plans with softball after high school?
A: My plans for softball after high school is to play at the next level whether it’s D1, D2, or D3, and going to a college that feels right and I can further my education at.
