(San Marino) Monrovia (8-2, 5-0) finishes a third straight year of being undefeated in league play beating La Canada (5-5, 3-2) on Friday night 34-10.
La Canada, looking for an upset, held the Cats to only three points in the first quarter.
The score came on M-towns second possession. The Wildcats took the ball down to the three yard line of the Spartans. Nick Bueno connected with Jay Henderson in the end zone, but a block in the back penalty cancelled out the touchdown and brought the ball back to the 27. Bueno followed with three straight incomplete passes to set up Mason Bryant for the 42-yard field goal.
La Canada responded by driving down the field led by Scott Gray to the 29-yard line before being stalled. On fourth down the Spartans Franklin Cervanka kicked a 35-yard field goal to equalize the score with 9:53 left in the second quarter.
Monrovia’s next drive ended when Bueno was picked off by LC’s Jeff Barker in the end zone. The Spartan, however, were forced to punt after going three and out.
On the second play of the Cat’s following possession Bueno scrambled to the right on a broken pass play and rounded the corner for a 36-yard touchdown.
On the Spartans next chance with the ball Gray had a pass tipped and intercepted by George Frazier who returned it to the 15.
After getting the ball to the four yard line Bueno handed the ball off to Anthony Craft who took the end around for the score.
The score at the half was Monrovia leading 17-3.
The Wildcats came out in the second half and rammed the ball down the Spartans throat with a hefty dose of soon to be Rio Hondo League MVP Nick Bueno. M-town drove 60 yards down the field and scored on Bueno’s run from eight yards out.
Following a 37-yard run by Bueno Monrovia scored again on the ground, this time with Christian Blanco pounding the ball in from three yards.
La Canada was able to put up a touchdown after getting the ball on the M-Town eight off of a Monrovia fumble. After three attempts Gray was able to find paydirt from one yard to make the score 31 to 10.
The Wildcats pushed the ball down the field and Bryant ended the scoring for the night with a 24-yard field goal.
Monrovia wins the Rio Hondo League for the fourth year in a row and will be a top seed in the playoffs for the Mid Valley division.
La Canada took third in a coin flip, which saw Temple City take second in the RHL and South Pasadena lose out on a chance at the playoffs. The Spartans have a good shot at one of the at-large bid thanks to some help with Rosemead taking care of El Monte.
