(Pasadena)- Most cross town rivalries consist of big crowds, trash talking, and a hard fought game between two teams. Friday night at the Rose Bowl, two out of three were on display as the Mustangs dominated the Bulldogs in every facet of a 63-6 Turkey Tussle victory.
With the victory, Muir set two Tussle records: Most points scored in a game (63) and largest margin of victory (57).
Mustangs quarterback Jeffrey Davis threw for three touchdowns, connecting with Karl Holmes, Deshawn Hayes, and Denzel Talifero on passes of 14, 6 and 30-yards respectively.
Poor execution on special teams also hurt the Bulldogs. In the second quarter, Brandon Jackson picked up a fumbled kick off and ran it in 11 yards for a score.
After PHS was forced to punt on its next series, Tairen Owens returned it 57 yards before being knocked out at the one yard line, setting himself up for a one yard touchdown run on the next play.
Owens also returned the opening kick off the second half 86-yards for a score.
Things again didn’t fare well on Pasadena’s next possession. After again going three and out, Muir’s Destiny Iwuoma flies in untouched and blocks the punt, recovers it, and runs it 25-yards for a score.
Traveion Yates was a thorn in the Bulldogs side all night. Yates contributed with a sack, an interception, as well as a 5 yard rushing touchdown.
Karl Holmes also caught a touchdown pass from backup Kevon Seymour.
“They worked hard for this game,” said Head Coach Ken Howard. “It wasn’t so much about beating PHS, it was about making the playoffs.”
