Arroyo (1-1) at La Puente (1-0)
Last Year: La Puente 35-20
Arroyo needs a victory to show it can knock of a good team. Also last year the Warriors came into B.L. Bergstrom and crushed the Knights. La Puente ran all over Arroyo a year ago and the Warriors have a good ground attack again featuring Jovanni Gonzalez. Quarterback Jacob Tovar isn’t bad either. LP figures to give Arroyo all it can handle but in the end Nathan Coto and company will have too much.

Bell Gardens (0-1) at El Rancho (1-1)
Last Year: El Rancho 52-28
BG is coming off a loss but really no shame when the opponent is Burbank. Charles Ontiveros and the Lancers are going to be good. El Rancho worked Marina but then got worked by Diamond Ranch. This game is always a good one- a real head knocker. Could come down to a field goal but in the end it’s Bell Gardens who knocks the most heads.

Glendora (1-0) at Bonita (2-0)
Bonita has already proved it can not only play with indeed beat the big boys. Tanner Diebold has guided a capable offense and Christian McQueen has been playing like well…we hate to use the word but…a beast. Glendora got a win over Claremont in the opener but the Tartans biggest problem is that they play in the Baseline. Bonita comes out on top.

Monrovia (1-0) at Arcadia (1-0)
Last Year: Monrovia 52-17
The Apaches are at home so they have an advantage there. Joey Harmon could come out and torch the Monrovia secondary and if Arcadia could get the running game going then maybe…no. It’s not happening. Put all thoughts of an upset to rest. First of all who can tackle Kurt Scoby? Who can keep up with Monrovia’s speed on the outside? Nobody and nobody. The Cats get started early and roll often. Monrovia…big.
Monrovia 38 Arcadia 10
San Dimas (0-2) at Diamond Bar (1-1)
Both teams need a victory – San Dimas to get off the snide and pick up its first win and Diamond Bar to get the bad taste of last week’s pummeling by Norwalk out of its head. Should be an interesting matchup. Diamond Bar has speed that the Saints might have trouble staying with but if San Dimas can get its running game going it could be a long night for the Brahmas. We saw Norwalk run over them last week. Bill Zernickow’s ground attack gets on track and San Dimas gets its first.

Servite (1-1) at La Mirada (0-2)
Talk about a team that needs a win. Mike Moschetti’s Matadores need one in the worst way. They made it interesting last week against La Habra but the comeback was aborted by a big turnover. Servite is well…Servite. The Friars are a PAC 5 team that hails from the Trinity League and is coming off a 31-24 win over Long Beach Poly. It might be asking a little too much of the Matadores to get their first win this week. Servite emerges with the W.
Servite 21 La Mirada 14
South Hills (1-1) at West Covina (2-0)
Last Year: West Covina 21-7
West Covina was a team under the radar – maybe not anymore. The Bulldogs have two wins over two pretty decent opponents. South Hills is much improved from the team that went 6-5 last year however the Huskies are coming off a tough loss to Bonita. It’s always a good matchup – nice cross town battle. Whoever makes the least mistakes wins and with a heavy ground atttack, that team should be West Covina. Bulldogs improve to 3-0.

Bassett (0-2) at El Monte (0-2)
Bassett was expected to a vastly better team in 2013 but so far that hasn’t happened. The Olympians were blown out by Maranatha in the opener before falling to Mt. View last week. We knew El Monte would take some hits early after losing several key players from last year to graduation. But in this game the Lions should take control. They need to be able to make some stops on defense but that seems likely against a Bassett team that has struggled offensively El Monte gets its first.

South El Monte (1-0) at Montebello (0-2)
Last Year: Montebello 13-8
It’s been a rough start for the Oilers coming out of the gate with two straight losses. South El Monte did what it should do last week in a big win over Nogales. Keep an eye on SEM sophomore running back Marcos Lopez. The Oilers have a good defense but it hasn’t rose to the occasion yet. Maybe this week it will. It’s a really a toss up game, or as they used to say in the old Herald Examiner – “pick ’em.” A home crowd could be enough for the Oilers. A field goal wins it late.

Schurr (0-1) at La Serna (1-1) at California High
Schurr got thumped by Buena Park last week (no surprise) while La Serna was falling to Los Osos by four. La Serna beat Vista in the opening week. The Lancers get somewhat of a reprieve this week from a schedule that looks like something just this side of the PAC 12. Schurr does play some elite teams tough – the Spartans lost just 24-14 to Downey last season. Schurr will battle La Serna again – maybe into late in the third quarter, but La Serna will ultimately prevail. Frankie Palmer leads his troops to a victory.
