(Pasadena) Dexter Myers picked of three passes and the Minutemen defense held Valley Christian to 13 points in a 38-13 victory Friday in the Olympic League opener for both squads.
While the defense was taking care of business on their side, the offense led by Caleb Devine, Eli Snyder and Xavious Boone made Valley Christian pay for their mistakes, especially in the second half. Maranatha outscored the Crusaders 28-7 if the final two periods of play.
On the other side of the field, Valley head coach Woodie Grayson must have felt as though he was competing not only with Maranatha but the officials as well. A bevy of yellow flags tainted the evening, both sides getting their share but when you are down and trying to come back, those flags seem to be all against you.
***Caleb Devine rushed for 158-yards and two touchdowns for Maranatha.
***The leading ground gainer for the Crusaders was Johnathan Nicholson.
***Through the air the Minutemen were led by Ely Snyder completing 11 of 19 for 114-yard and a score. Snyder also threw an interception but Valley was not able to capitalize on the turnover. Snyder also added 62-yards on the ground.
***Struiksma got the majority of the snaps when the Crusaders decided to throw the football but only managed to complete 3 of nine for 105-yards.
***As usual Xavious Boone was Snyders favorite target hauling inĀ four passes for 65-yards and a score.
***Two of Valley’s highlights were provided by Kyle Westra who caught tow passes, one for 29 and another for a big 70-yard completion.
***David Allen also chipped in with a one yard touchdown which would turn out to be the last score of the evening for both teams.
***The linemen grinding it out for the Crusader were LT Ravon Chambers, LG Luke Konkowski, C Zach Krosschell, RG Eric Schoonover, RT Joe Castanos.
***Maranatha will try to keep their record clean heading over the hill to face Village Christian at Occidental College.
***Valley will stay home and try to get back on the winning track against Whittier Christian.
