Southeast Newcomer of The Year 2014: Cathedral’s Andrew Tovar

Cathedral QB, southpaw, Andrew Tovar

Cathedral QB, southpaw, Andrew Tovar

Andrew  Tovar didn’t think his chance would come at Cathedral until 2015. The Phantoms already had a quarterback in MC Poe who had thrown for over 1400 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2013 and was coming back for his senior season. But Poe transferred out of state and Tovar was suddenly thrust into the spotlight and given his time to shine.

And shine he did. The sophomore threw for 3530 yards and 45 touchdowns (not a typo) while leading Cathedral into the second round of the playoffs. Those numbers were more than three times what Poe had put up the year before. Tovar had some of his best performances against quality opponents. He threw for 419 yards and six touchdowns in a loss to St. Francis and 393 yards and three scores in a first round playoff victory over Muir.

Tovar didn’t miss a game all season and completed over 64 percent of his passes with a QB rating of 124.7. From the time the southpaw stepped up in week one, another win over Muir, the Phantoms knew they had nothing to worry about at quarterback.

Tovar grabbed his opportunity and not only took advantage of it but owned it in 2014. For that he is our Southeast Division Newcomer of the Year.
